Franco Selvaggi (born May 15, 1953 in Pomarico ( MT ), Italy ) is a former Italian football player .

During his active career he played as a striker and became world champion with Italy in 1982 .

Career

Selvaggi started his professional career at Ternana Calcio , for whom he against on December 30, 1972 Fiorentina in the Serie A debut. For the 1972/73 season he moved to AS Roma , where he was only used in two games during the season. After Selvaggi returned to Ternana for a few months in 1974, he switched to Taranto Sport . There he spent five Serie B seasons and became a top performer.

For the 1979/80 season Franco Selvaggi then moved to Serie A promoted Cagliari Calcio , where he scored twelve goals straight away and was fourth on the top scorer list behind Roberto Bettega , Alessandro Altobelli and Paolo Rossi . In the following two seasons, Selvaggi also performed very well at the Sardinian club and thus recommended himself for the national team .

On April 19, 1981 Selvaggi made his debut under coach Enzo Bearzot in the 0-0 against the GDR in the Squadra Azzurra . After two more international matches, he was finally appointed by Bearzot to the Italian squad for the 1982 World Cup in Spain . Franco Selvaggi was not on the field for a single minute, but was still able to celebrate winning the World Cup.

After the World Cup, Selvaggi moved to AC Turin and was never called up to the national team as a result. At Toro he formed the storm duo first with Carlo Borghi and later with the Austrian Walter Schachner . For the 1984/85 season Franco Selvaggi went to Udinese Calcio , in the following season he ran for Inter Milan and in the following season he ran for SS Sambenedettese Calcio on the field and ended his active career in 1987.
