Giuseppe "Beppe" Bergomi (born December 22, 1963 in Milan ) is a former Italian football player and current coach .
In 2004 he was named one of the 125 best football players alive by Pelé .
Career
In the club
Bergomi made his debut in the first team of Inter Milan in the Coppa Italia on January 30, 1980 when he played against Juventus Turin at the age of 16. He quickly developed into a regular player in the defensive network of the first team, mostly as a defender or libero . His strengths were the excellent positional play and his great calm. He was nicknamed “Lo Zio” (“The Uncle”) by fans because of his distinctive mustache.
In the 1980s and early 1990s, Inter stood in the shadow of their local rivals AC Milan for a long time . It took until 1989 before Inter became Italian champions again with Bergomi as head of defense . Bergomi was more successful with his team at international level, where he won the UEFA Cup with Inter in 1991, 1994 and 1998 . To date, he is the record player in the UEFA Cup and Europa League with 95 appearances.
Bergomi was defensive chief at the Nerazzurri for a total of 19 years before "Il Capitano" ("The Captain") played its last competitive game on May 23, 1999 at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium against FC Bologna . He played a total of 756 competitive games for Inter Milan (519 in Serie A , 120 in national cup games and 117 in European Cup ). He was the Milanese record player for a long time until he was replaced by Javier Zanetti in 2011 . Bergomi also scored 23 goals in his club career at Inter.
In the national team
Bergomi was the youngest player in Enzo Bearzot's squad for the Italian national team , who won the 1982 World Cup in Spain . After the disappointing preliminary round with three draws for Italy, he was substituted on in the second final round against Brazil in a 3-2 win and suddenly became a regular player after an outstanding game. Bergomi had the left winger Éder Aleixo as an opponent and successfully prevented him from completing or preparing. In the World Cup final he had "European Footballer of the Year" in 1980 and 1981, the German right winger Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as an opponent. Bergomi also did this job satisfactorily and thus contributed to Italy's World Cup victory.
Giuseppe Bergomi later took part in three other world championships: 1986 in Mexico , 1990 in Italy and 1998 in France , when he returned to the national team at the age of 34. He was also at the EM-1988 regular player of the Squadra Azzurra . He made a total of 81 international appearances and scored six goals, mostly as a defender in association with Franco Baresi , Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Costacurta .
