Career
In the club
At the beginning of his career, Javier Zanetti played for Talleres de Escalada (1992-1993) and Club Atlético Banfield (1993-1995). In 1995 Zanetti moved to Europe for the traditional Italian club Inter Milan . He made his Serie A debut on August 27, 1995 in a 1-0 home win against Vicenza Calcio . Zanetti won his first title with Inter in the 1997/98 season: In the all-Italian final of the UEFA Cup , his team beat Lazio 3-0 , with the Argentine making it 2-0.
Since Giuseppe Bergomi's retirement after the 1998/99 season , Zanetti was the team captain of Inter Milan.
On September 25, 2008, he completed his 600th competitive game for the Nerazzuri in the league home game against US Lecce . Only Giuseppe Bergomi (756) was in the club's all-time best list at that time, ahead of the Argentine. On February 24, 2009, Zanetti played his 118th European Cup game for Inter in the last 16 of the Champions League and thus set a club record.
On April 3, 2010, Zanetti was suspended when Inter beat Bologna 3-0 at home . So he missed a league game for the first time since October 28, 2006. On April 16, 2010, he played his 500th Serie A game for Inter Milan.
The 2010 UEFA Champions League final , in which Inter Milan defeated FC Bayern Munich 2-0, was Zanetti's 700th game in the Inter jersey. Zanetti replied: "This is the most important and most beautiful victory. We all deserve it and I am proud to be the captain of this great Inter team." In August of the same year, at the age of almost 37, he extended his contract with Inter, which ran until 2011, until the end of June 2013.
In the semi-final second leg of the Italian Cup competition against AS Roma on May 11, 2011, Zanetti played his 1000th competitive game as a professional footballer (at that time, among other things, 749 games for Inter and 140 for the Argentine national football team ).
On September 20, 2011, Zanetti played his 757th competitive game for Inter Milan in a league game against Novara Calcio . He replaced Giuseppe Bergomi, who had made 756 official appearances in the Nerazzuri jersey , as the Milanese record player.
In the 2012/13 season , the Argentine completed his 600th league game for Inter. In the same season, on April 28, 2013 in a league game against US Palermo , Zanetti, who had been spared major wounds in his career so far, seriously injured his left Achilles tendon. An injury-related absence of eight months and thus a comeback at the earliest in the 2013/14 season was forecast. Zanetti assured, however, that his career was not over yet and that he would return. Despite Zanetti's injury, on June 12, 2013, Inter decided to extend his expiring contract for another year. After recovering from his injury, he actually returned and started playing in Serie A on matchday 12 of the 2013/14 season . On April 29, 2014, he then announced that he would end his career and switch to club management at Inter Milan from the 2014/15 season. His number 4 was not reassigned.
In the national team
Javier Zanetti made his debut for the Argentine national team on November 16, 1994 in a 3-0 win over Chile . He then played the 1996 Olympic soccer tournament in Atlanta with the U23 team in his country and won the silver medal. At the 1998 World Cup he scored the equalizer for 2-2 against England in stoppage time in the first half, and the Albiceleste won 4-3 on penalties . In the quarterfinals he failed with Argentina against the Netherlands .
After Roberto Ayala sustained an injury shortly before the 2002 World Cup , Zanetti was appointed captain by then national coach Marcelo Bielsa . Despite stars like Gabriel Batistuta , Juan Sebastián Verón or Ariel Ortega, the team could not meet the high expectations and failed in the preliminary round. In 2004 he was in the squad for the Copa America 2004 , in which he finished second with Argentina after the final defeat against Brazil .
Despite several appearances in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup , he was not nominated by coach José Pekerman for the World Cup squad, instead he took Lionel Scaloni with him. This decision outraged many fans and the media. "I don't know if there were any footballing or non-footballing reasons. But I can sleep peacefully because I have given so much to this country and I still feel like a player in the Argentina national team," Zanetti was quoted after he said of the non-nomination of the tournament. In the summer of 2007, he again took part in the Copa America . Zanetti was used several times during the tournament and led the team as captain. The tournament victory was denied him, however, because Argentina, as in 2004, lost in the final against Brazil.
On October 16, 2008, he completed his 115th international match in the qualifying game for the 2010 World Cup against Venezuela (2-0) and set Roberto Ayala's international record for Argentina . From November 17, 2010 until the 2018 World Cup , he was the sole record holder of Argentina with 145 international matches before he was replaced by Javier Mascherano .
For the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , he was not appointed to the Argentina squad by national coach Diego Maradona . After the World Cup, he was appointed by interim coach Sergio Batista in the squad for the game against world champions Spain on September 7, 2010 and was used again in Argentina after almost a year after a 4-1 win. With the Albiceleste he then took part in the Copa America 2011 in his home country and was on the field in all four games in Argentina. However, he could not prevent the early exit of his team in the quarter-finals.
