statistics

Silvio Piola was the first player in the 1951/52 season to complete over 500 league games in Serie A. By the end of his career in 1954, the record scorer in Serie A expanded his record to 537 games. It was only in the 1979/80 season that goalkeeper Dino Zoff surpassed him and played a total of 570 games in the top division in 20 years. At the beginning of the 21st century, the record fell several times: Gianluca Pagliuca ended his active career in 2007 and broke the previous record with his 592 missions, which was exceeded again in the same year by Paolo Maldini . When Maldini ended his 25-year professional career in the service of AC Milan two years later, he had set a new record with 647 games.

Maldini was also the longest active player with at least 400 appearances with 25 years of presence in Serie A. Gino Armano only needed 13 years for his 401 league games and was the shortest active player to date. Among the 57 players who have played at least 400 games are three players who played for a team other than the Italian national team.
