Gianluca Pagliuca (born December 18, 1966 in Bologna ) is a former Italian football player .

He is with his 592 appearances record keeper of the Serie A .

Career

The goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca began his professional career in 1985 at his home club FC Bologna . But in 1986 he moved to Sampdoria Genoa , where he played until 1994 and became an Italian international . In 1990 he won the European Cup Winners' Cup with Sampdoria , in 1991 he won the only Italian championship so far for Sampdoria and in 1992 he was in the final of the European Cup , which his club lost 1-0 after extra time against FC Barcelona .

He took part in the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he was Walter Zenga's substitute goalkeeper . At the soccer World Cup in the USA in 1994 he was already the number 1 goalkeeper. The preliminary round of this game didn't start very promisingly. The first game was lost against Ireland 1-0 and in the second game against Norway Pagliuca was the first goalkeeper in the history of the World Cup to be sent off in the 22nd minute due to an emergency brake. The game was won 1-0 anyway. Pagliuca was suspended for two games and replaced by Luca Marchegiani from Lazio . Italy managed to fight their way through to the quarter-finals and Pagliuca was back between the posts against Spain . This game was won 2-1 and the team was in the final against Brazil after a semi-final victory over Bulgaria . After 120 minutes there was still no goal, the penalty shoot-out had to determine the world champion for the first time at a World Cup tournament . Here then Gianluca Pagliuca and his Brazilian competitor Cláudio Taffarel were in the center of the action. Pagliuca was able to save Márcio Santos's first penalty , but as Taffarel parried Daniele Massaro's penalty and Franco Baresi and Roberto Baggio shot the ball over the goal, Brazil became world champions.

Gianluca Pagliuca moved to Inter Milan after this World Cup . With Inter he was in the 1997 UEFA Cup final and lost it to FC Schalke 04 in the second leg in Milan on penalties. A year later he was finally able to win the third European Cup. In the final against Lazio Rome, his club won 3-0. After winning the UEFA Cup, Pagliuca played at the 1998 World Cup in France . After national coach Arrigo Sacchi relied on the services of Angelo Peruzzi at the European Football Championship in 1996 , the new coach Cesare Maldini relied on Pagliuca again and again he had to compete in a penalty shoot-out. In the quarter-finals, Italy brought hosts France to the brink of defeat. On penalties, Pagliuca initially saved a penalty from Bixente Lizarazu , but Demetrio Albertini then missed . Luigi Di Biagio was the last to miss and Italy was eliminated again on penalties.

Pagliuca moved back to his hometown for Bologna in 1999 as he was to be replaced by Angelo Peruzzi at Inter. In 2005, the goalkeeper stayed at Bologna, although this was relegated to Serie B and Pagliuca had good chances of becoming the record goalkeeper in Serie A. On July 1, 2006, Pagliuca finally moved to Ascoli Calcio at the age of 39, where he replaced Ferdinando Coppola , who was moving to Milan . At that time Ascoli was building on young talent and had signed him as a player with enormous experience for the relatively young and inexperienced team.

On September 17, 2006, Pagliuca cracked Dino Zoff's age-old goalkeeping record when he played his 571st Serie A game with Ascoli against FC Messina . He played his 592nd and last Serie A game against Udinese Calcio on February 18, 2007.
