On January 15, 1989 Albertini made his debut in the 4-0 home win of AC Milan against Como Calcio . In total, he won five championships with Milan.

In 2002 he took on loan for a season at the Spanish capital club Atlético Madrid . This was followed by a move to Lazio Rome in exchange with Giuseppe Pancaro . In the 2004/05 season he moved to Atalanta Bergamo , Albertini stayed for six months and then moved back to Spain for FC Barcelona . In 2005 the Italian ended his career after only five games for Barça, but still won the Spanish championship with Barcelona.

Albertini played 79 times for the Italian national team from 1991 to 2002 .
