Alessandro Nesta (born March 19, 1976 in Rome ) is a former Italian soccer player and today's soccer coach . Since July 1, 2019, he has been the head coach of the Italian second division club Frosinone Calcio .

Player career

society

Alessandro Nesta grew up in the southern Roman suburb of Cinecittà . His brother Giuseppe, who was nine years older than him, played for Milan for two years , albeit not as successfully as his brother.

Since his youth Nesta played for the Roman football club Lazio Rome . His father insisted that his son not play for city rivals AS Roma , although their talent scouts made the family a tempting offer, because the whole family were Laziali, supporters of Lazio. Under Lazios coach Dino Zoff Nesta made his Serie A debut against Udinese Calcio in 1994. His importance for the team grew steadily, so that he was appointed team captain in the 1997/98 season. Nesta made 193 Serie A appearances for Lazio.

From the 2002/03 season Nesta played for AC Milan and formed the central defense with Paolo Maldini until his career ended . Nesta's contract with AC Milan ran until 2012.

In July 2012, Nesta moved to Montreal Impact in the North American MLS .

In the national team he formed one of the best center-back duos in the world with Fabio Cannavaro and at AC Milan with Paolo Maldini.

National team

At the U-21 European Championship in 1996 , Nesta won the title with the Italian selection coached by Cesare Maldini and was named the best defender of the tournament.

Shortly thereafter, he participated in the European Championship in England , this time with the senior national team. Nesta, who had not yet played an A international match, was appointed to the European Championship squad by Arrigo Sacchi , but was not used in the tournament. On October 5, 1996 he finally made his debut under Cesare Maldini against Moldova .

In 1998 Alessandro Nesta took part in the World Cup in France with Italy . There he suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in the third round match against Austria and then fell out for months. This was followed by participation in the EM 2000 , where he was appointed to the UEFA Allstar team and became vice European champion. Nesta was also in the squad for the 2002 World Cup and 2004 European Championship .

At the 2006 World Cup in Germany , Nesta was injured after strong performances in the third round match against the Czech Republic and was not fit again until the final. Winning the World Cup represents his greatest success with the national team.

At the beginning of August 2007, just two weeks after Francesco Totti's resignation , Nesta also announced that she no longer wanted to play for the Squadra Azzurra . The reasons he gave the double burden of club and international matches, but it was speculated that disputes between him and national coach Roberto Donadoni were the real reasons for his resignation. The 3-1 win against Georgia on October 11, 2006 was Nesta's last international match.
