Marco Materazzi (born August 19, 1973 in Lecce ) is a former Italian football player and current coach . He played in central defense. He is a son of Giuseppe Materazzi , who coached Lazio Rome and Sporting Lisbon .

Career

In the club

Earlier in his career Materazzi played at clubs like unterklassigen Marsala Calcio and AS Trapani in the C series . In 1995 he signed the AC Perugia for Serie B , in which he could not prevail at the beginning and was loaned to the third division Carpi FC in 1996 . On his return he played one more season in Perugia before moving to England for Everton in 1998 .

Materazzi stayed there only one season; in 27 games he scored one goal and was sent off three times. After his third expulsion in the game on April 11, 1999 against Coventry City , he complained that the English were very nationalistic and that he was treated specially because of his Italian origins and only therefore was sent off so often.

Then Materazzi returned to Italy, again to AC Perugia. Initially, however, there were difficulties with the transfer modalities, which were however settled after a mediation by FIFA . In Perugia, he was also noticed by his free kicks, which led to twelve goals in the 2000/01 season. He broke the record as a defender with the most goals within a season, which Daniel Passarella had set up with eleven goals in 1984/85.

Materazzi in the dress of Inter (2009)

2001 it undertook Inter Milan as the successor to Laurent Blanc . Materazzi was particularly noticeable in the European Cup and was appointed to the national team by Giovanni Trapattoni . In the following years, numerous injuries forced him to pause again and again. Materazzi was therefore ousted from the line-up by Siniša Mihajlović at the end of 2004 .

In the 2008/09 season Materazzi was rarely used under the new coach José Mourinho and only completed eight league games. "He always played well when he was needed last season," said Massimo Moratti and Mourinho is still planning with him. For this reason, his current contract with Inter Milan was extended on June 10, 2009 until the end of the 2009/10 season. A short time later, his contract was extended beyond 2010 to June 30, 2012. In June 2011 he dissolved his contract with Inter Milan.

In September 2014 Materazzi continued his career as a player- coach for Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League .

In the national team

Materazzi took part in the soccer world championships in 2002 and 2006 and was world champion with Italy in the final of the soccer world championship 2006 against France after a penalty shoot-out . He was also at the 2004 European Championships and 2008 European Championships in the Italian squad .

World Championship 2006

The central defender of Inter Milan was not part of the regular formation of national coach Marcello Lippi before the tournament . It was only when Alessandro Nesta injured himself in the last group game against the Czech Republic that Materazzi came on as a substitute and, after being substituted on, scored the 1-0 lead with a header from a corner.

Marco Materazzi was often the focus of attention during the World Cup : in the round of 16 against Australia he received the red card after a foul and was only used again in the semi-final against Germany .

In the final, he initially caused a penalty for France in the 6th minute of the game and scored the equalizer for Italy in the 19th minute with a header after a corner from Andrea Pirlo . In the extension of the final, Materazzi came in the 109th minute of the game with the French captain Zinédine Zidane , who was then sent off. In the subsequent penalty shootout, Materazzi was able to convert a penalty.

The Zidane case

In the 109th minute of the game, Zidane Materazzi hit his head in the chest and was then sent off. This was triggered by Materazzi's provocative insults against Zidane, which Materazzi initially denied, but admitted a few days later. The Gazzetta dello Sport told Materazzi that he only briefly held Zidane's jersey. The Frenchman eyed him condescendingly and said that if he wanted he could have the shirt after the game, which led Materazzi to make his comments.

On July 13, 2006, FIFA opened proceedings against Marco Materazzi to investigate the incident. He and Zidane had to testify before a disciplinary committee on July 20. Both players stated that Materazzi's insults were defamatory, but not racist in nature. Materazzi was sentenced to two games and a fine of 5,000 Swiss francs . So he could not be used in the European Championship qualifier on September 6, 2006 in Paris (3-1 for France).

On August 18, 2007, Materazzi announced the wording of his abuse on Italian television. When Zidane asked if Materazzi wanted his jersey, he replied: " Preferisco la puttana di tua sorella " (German: "I prefer your sister, the whore."). In the same year Materazzi published a book about the headbutt. In September 2012, a bronze statue by Adel Abdessemed for Zidane and Materazzi was unveiled in front of the Center Pompidou in Paris , depicting the headbutt scene. In 2013, the monument stood temporarily on the seashore in Doha , the capital of Qatar . Since then, the monument has been in the Arab Museum of Modern Art in ar-Rayyan in Qatar.
