Alberto Gilardino (born July 5, 1982 in Biella ) is a former Italian football player . Gilardino played in the position of striker and was under contract with Spezia Calcio until the end of 2018 . He now works as a coach, currently he is coaching the Serie C club FC Pro Vercelli .
Career
In the club
In the 2003/04 season , Alberto Gilardino was second behind Andrij Shevchenko (23 goals in 34 games) in the Serie A goalscorer list . Also in the 2004/05 season he found his accuracy back after initial difficulties. With 23 hits in 38 games contributed to the relegation of his financially troubled club AC Parma (from 2004 FC Parma ). He also finished second in the scorers list for the second time in a row (behind Cristiano Lucarelli from AS Livorno ).
On July 18, 2005, he signed a five-year contract with AC Milan , which paid a € 25 million transfer fee to AC Parma. After three years with AC Milan, Gilardino moved to ACF Florence , where he also signed a five-year contract.
During the winter break of 2011/12, CFC Genoa signed Gilardino. For the 2012/13 season Gilardino moved on loan to FC Bologna .
On July 11, 2014 it was announced that Gilardino was moving to the Chinese first division team Guangzhou Evergrande with immediate effect , where he met his former national coach Marcello Lippi . He signed for two and a half years. From January 2015 Gilardino was loaned to the ACF Florence until the end of the season. He has been playing for US Palermo since summer 2015 .
After a season with US Palermo , Gilardino played for FC Empoli in the first half of the 2016/17 season . In January 2017, he moved to league rivals Delfino Pescara 1936 . After half a year Gilardino switched to Spezia Calcio .
In the national team
Gilardino became European champion and bronze medalist at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens with the Italian U-21 national team . With 19 goals he is the record scorer of the U-21 youth team in Italy.
Gilardino played his first international match under coach Marcello Lippi on September 4, 2004 with the World Cup qualifier against Norway . In 2006 he was part of the Italian world championship squad at the 2006 World Cup in Germany , was used five times and scored one goal. In 2010 he was nominated for Italy's World Cup squad by national coach Lippi . He played there in the first two preliminary round games from the start. In the decisive game against Slovakia (2: 3) he was no longer used; Italy was eliminated after the preliminary round.
On June 7, 2011 Gilardino completed his last international match for the time being in a 2-0 win in a friendly against Ireland . After he had been in the squad in the European Championship qualifiers against the Faroe Islands and Slovenia in September 2011 , he was not nominated for a year in the following period. It was not until February 6, 2013 that he played again for the Italian national team in a friendly against the Netherlands .
