Andrea Barzagli [ anˈdrɛa barˈʦaʎʎi ] (born May 8, 1981 in Fiesole ) is a former Italian football player .

He played in the position of defender and was most recently under contract with Juventus Turin in Serie A. Barzagli was part of the world championship squad of the Italian national football team at the 2006 World Cup in Germany .

Career

Career in Italy (1998–2008)

Andrea Barzagli started his career in lying near his hometown Fiesole Florence at Rondinella Calcio in Serie D . Here he played two and a half seasons before moving to AC Pistoiese in Serie B , where he was unable to assert himself and in 2001 returned to Rondinella for a short time. For the 2001/02 season Barzagli moved for the first time to a club outside of Tuscany , namely to the Serie C1 club Ascoli Calcio . There he was able to earn a regular place. In the first season in Ascoli Piceno , the promotion to the second highest Italian league succeeded.

Thanks to his convincing performances, he moved into the focus of various Serie A clubs. So it was hardly surprising when Barzagli moved from Ascoli to Chievo Verona at the end of the 2002/03 season, where he immediately made it into the regular squad under Luigi Delneri . After a season in Verona , he moved to US Palermo , where he was in the regular formation for four years and was also team captain in the 2007/08 season. In his first season in Palermo he qualified with the club from Sicily for the 2005/06 UEFA Cup , in which they were eliminated in the round of 32 against FC Schalke 04 .

VfL Wolfsburg (2008-2010)

For the 2008/09 season , Andrea Barzagli moved to Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg for around ten million euros , where he received a three-year contract. There he met Cristian Zaccardo , who had also recently moved from Palermo to Germany . With VfL Wolfsburg, Barzagli won the German championship under coach Felix Magath in 2009 and completed 75 Bundesliga games for Lower Saxony, in which he scored a goal. After losing his regular place in the Wolfsburg team to Arne Friedrich, who had recovered from an injury, at the beginning of the second half of the 2010/11 season , Barzagli left VfL six months before the end of his contract.

Return to Italy (2011)

For around half a million euros, he moved back to Italy at the end of January 2011 and joined Juventus Turin . There he immediately had a permanent place and played almost all of the remaining Serie A games over the full distance. Barzagli took a disappointing seventh place with the Turin team under coach Luigi Delneri and thus missed participation in a European Cup. For the 2011/12 season Antonio Conte took over the position of head coach at Juventus Turin and Barzagli finally established himself as a regular in the Bianconeri's defense . In 38 league games there were only 20 goals conceded for the Turin and at the end of the season they won the Italian championship. Barzagli scored his first goal for Juventus Turin on the final day of the match on May 13, 2012 in a 3-1 win over Atalanta Bergamo . In the following two years he was able to win the Italian championship with Juventus Turin, where he formed the BBC defensive line with Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini . In the UEFA Champions League but Juventus retired early from in the 2012/13 season which meant Bayern Munich last stop and in the following season , the club already failed in the group stage. After the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , he missed the entire first half of the 2014/15 season due to injury . At the end of this season, in addition to the double, they made it into the final of the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League , in which they were defeated by FC Barcelona . On November 8, 2015 Barzagli ran for the 300th time in Serie A. On November 6, 2016, he dislocated his shoulder in a game against Chievo Verona , but he recovered faster than expected and was back on the field on December 17 in the home game against AS Roma . At the end of the 2016/17 season, Barzagli reached the final of the UEFA Champions League again with Juventus Turin , this time losing to Real Madrid . On November 26, 2017, he played his 200th Serie A game for Juventus Turin in a 2-0 win against FC Bologna . At the end of the 2017/18 season there was the fourth double win in a row.

After some injuries, he retired at the age of 38 at the end of the 2018/19 season.

In the national team

Andrea Barzagli played a total of 23 games for the Italian U-20 and U-21 teams and won the U-21 European Championship title and bronze medal at the Summer Olympics in Athens in 2004 under coach Claudio Gentile .

He made his debut on November 17, 2004 under Marcello Lippi in the 1-0 win against Finland in the Italian national team . Since then he has been a permanent member of the national team and achieved the greatest success of his career by winning the World Cup title at the 2006 World Cup in Germany . Barzagli was also in the Italian squad at the 2008 European Championships in Austria and Switzerland . He played a game in this tournament and suffered a knee injury in the run-up to the quarter-finals against eventual European champions Spain , in which the Azzurri lost on penalties, which forced him to take a month-long break. On September 6, 2008, Barzagli played his last international match in a 2-1 win in the World Cup qualifier in Nicosia against Cyprus . Although he was in the squad four days later in the 2-0 win in the World Cup qualifier against Georgia , he has not been nominated for a long time since then.

In October 2011, when he was back in Italy for Juventus Turin, Barzagli was nominated again after three years for the Italian national team when he was nominated for the European Championship qualifiers against Serbia and Northern Ireland . On October 7, 2011 he returned to the national team in a 1-1 draw in the European Championship qualifier against Serbia. At the European Championships in 2012 in Poland and the Ukraine , Barzagli was runner-up in Europe.

He was then used in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil until June 2013 in all six games. Barzagli was then part of the Italian squad at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil, for which Italy had qualified as runner-up European champions, and was used in three out of five games; Italy finished third. In the remaining games in the preliminary round of the World Cup, Barzagli was not part of the squad, but Cesare Prandelli nominated him for the squad for the finals in Brazil. Barzagli was used in all three games and retired with the Squadra Azzurra after the group stage

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included as a regular player in the Italian squad . He and Leonardo Bonucci were the only two players in the squad to appear in all five games. Barzagli did not miss a minute of the game. In the quarter-finals against Germany, he was one of the successful shooters on penalties, but the team still lost and was eliminated.

After the European Championship, Italy played in the World Cup qualifiers and came in second behind Spain . In the play-offs, the team was eliminated against Sweden . The second leg was Barzagli's 73rd and last international match. After missing the World Cup, Barzagli announced his retirement from the national team.
