Football has been an official Olympic discipline since the 1908 Olympic Games . Two Olympic football tournaments are taking place, an U-23 tournament for men since 1992 and an unlimited one for women since 1996.

Demonstration competitions in football were already held at the Olympic Games in 1900 and 1904 and the interim games in Athens in 1906 . There, however, football clubs and sometimes mixed selections competed against each other. International matches were not played until 1908. The first official encounter in history was won by the Danish national team against a French B team at the 1908 Olympic football tournament . There it was also stipulated that paid players (professionals) are not allowed to participate.

After that, only once, at the 1932 Olympics , football was not part of the Olympic program. The IOC had officially canceled football due to disputes about amateur status. According to other sources, the hosts of the Los Angeles Games were hostile to football. In 1952 qualifying games were introduced for the first time. The games, especially the first round, usually take place not only in the actual venue of the summer games, but also in other places in the country.

Women's football has been an Olympic discipline since the 1996 Atlanta Games , and it was the first time that a women's tournament was held with eight teams.

Importance and player status

The Olympic soccer tournament had the status of a soccer world championship until 1928 , but after the introduction of the same in 1930 and the rise of professionalism , especially in some countries in Europe and South America in the 20s and 30s of the last century, its importance declined sharply, as it was exclusively amateurs were allowed to start and the best players from these countries were therefore no longer allowed to participate in the tournaments. Until 1980 only amateur players were officially allowed to start. This also included the so-called " state amateurs " of the Eastern Bloc countries , which usually allowed them to compete with their national teams, which led to great differences in performance compared to countries with professional football, which could only send amateurs. Because of this, the Eastern Bloc countries, which mostly did not do very well at soccer world championships and soccer European championships , were the eight times Olympic champion after the Second World War until 1988.

In 1984 the IOC wanted to allow professional players to take part in the tournaments for the first time after the tournament had continued to lose importance. As a compromise, a compromise was reached with FIFA that national teams from UEFA and CONMEBOL were only allowed to field professionals who had not yet participated in a football World Cup. This rule was replaced in 1992 by an age restriction according to which only players who are not older than 23 years, regardless of whether they are amateur or professional, are allowed to participate. The Olympic soccer tournament has thus developed into a high point for the careers of young soccer players. Since 1996, however, each team has been allowed to be supplemented by up to three older players, so that in 2008, for example, Argentina and Brazil competed with teams that were reinforced by senior national players (including Ronaldinho , Riquelme ) and in 2012 Spain used players who had previously won the European Championship could. Often there are also under 23-year-olds who have long been a national team player thanks to their talent.

For the reasons mentioned above, FIFA generally only recognizes the matches up to the tournament of the Melbourne Games in 1956 as official A international matches .

See also: FIFA regulations on international matches

In contrast to the men, there is no age limit at the women's tournament. As a rule, the respective national teams compete there, which means that the women's Olympic soccer tournament has a far greater sporting value than that of the men, comparable to that of a women's world championship .

Overview of the competitions

The soccer tournaments of 1900, 1904 and 1906 are fully recognized by the IOC - FIFA classifies them as demonstration sports at the Olympic Games because only club teams took part.

qualification

In the first few years there were no qualifications before the start of the games. In some sources, however, the preliminary or first rounds that took place at the location of the games are referred to as "qualifications". An actual qualification with home and away legs was introduced in 1956 to reduce the number of registered participants. For cost and political reasons, several countries canceled, so that only 11 nations started in Melbourne. From 1960 there were continental qualifications, with Israel first taking part in the European qualification, from 1964 to 1976 in the Asian qualification, in 1980 and 1984 again in the European qualifications and in 1988 in the oceanic qualification. Israel has been participating in the European qualification again since 1992. After the People's Republic of China took part in the qualification for the first time in 1980 (but then boycotted the Games), the Republic of China had to take part as “ Chinese Taipei ” - first in 1984 and 1988 in the Oceanic qualification, since 1992 in the Asian qualification again.

From 1964 to 1984, the defending champion was automatically qualified in addition to the host.

The U-21 European Championship has been decisive for qualifying in Europe since 1992, and the U-20 South American Football Championship in South America since 2008 . Separate qualification competitions take place on the other four continents, with some intercontinental play-off games taking place, as most recently between Senegal and Oman. Great Britain also plays a special role: Since the four British national teams take part in the European championships, there is no possibility that Great Britain can qualify for the Olympic Games. If z. B. England or Scotland occupied one of the places that was necessary for participation, the next best European team moved up. This was e.g. For example, in 1996 when Scotland finished fourth, which allowed Portugal to qualify. Only in 2012 was a British team able to host the finals again due to the host role.

* In contrast to FIFA, the demonstration tournaments of 1900 and 1904 are regarded by the IOC as official Olympic tournaments and are taken into account accordingly in their statistics. Although in both cases there were no national teams or national teams at the start, the medals are assigned to the countries of the participating clubs or selections.
** Final against Czechoslovakia canceled when the score was 2: 0, instead tournament for 2nd place.
*** Two bronze medals were awarded.

* In 1972 two bronze medals were awarded because the game for third place between the GDR and the USSR ended 2-2 (2-1) after extra time and a penalty shoot-out was not planned at that time.

** The bronze medal from 1964 was won by the GDR selection , which last time participated in the Olympic Games in Tokyo in an all-German Olympic team with the FRG under the name Germany . Previously, the GDR had prevailed in the qualifying games against the DFB selection .
