The Fijian national soccer team qualified for the first time in 2015 for the Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro the following year . Previously, the Fijians, who first qualified for the 1992 Games, had always failed to qualify. In the first qualification, Fiji also benefited from the fact that New Zealand - which had failed against Fiji in qualifying in 2012 - had used an ineligible player in the semifinals against Vanuatu. This is the second time that a team from Fiji will take part in a major intercontinental tournament , following the U-20 team that qualified for the 2015 U-20 World Cup.
