Early years

The sport of football came to Fiji with the arrival of the first Europeans . A Suva Soccer Football Club was founded in 1905. In it were mainly European government employees and businessmen. Five years later, a team from Suva played against one from Nausori . Sailors from visiting warships also played against local clubs. In 1910 a team from Suva won 3-1 against a team from HMS Powerful . Four years later, Suvaner won 2-0 against HMS Torch at Albert Park . In 1922 the Sunshine Club was founded in Suva. There were also four teams that played on the pitch of the Marist Brothers School in Toorak . In 1930 the governor in charge approved two playing fields for use in football competitions.

Foundation of the Suva Football Association

The Indian Reform League was the first type of association to organize football in Suva. In December 1927, she hosted a school soccer competition in the local Albert Park. The Methodist Mission School , Marist Brothers School, Munivatu Indian School and the Islamia School took part. Due to the success of the tournament, the association decided on January 22, 1928 to found a football association committee. The editor of the monthly magazine Vriddhi , IH Beattie, donated a trophy and the first competition was held on May 26, 1928 at the Marist Brothers School. The participating teams were Indian Reform League Football Club, Toorak Service Club, Dilkusha Excelsior Football Club, Rewa Football Club and the Union Club. In 1936 the association was renamed the Suva Football Association. The number of clubs grew to eight in 1936, 16 in 1945 and 41 in 1958. Competitions were held between adults, reservists, young people and children.

Suva was one of the founding members of the Fiji Indian Football Association , which was formed in 1938 and renamed the Fiji Football Association in 1961 .
