The Myanmar national football team is the selection of the Myanmar Football Federation and thus the team of the Southeast Asian state of Myanmar (Burma until 1989). She represents Myanmar at continental and regional tournaments.
Home of the national team are the Thuwanna Stadium and the Bogyoke Aung San Stadium in the former capital, Rangoon. However, there are only a few international matches in Myanmar. Due to the isolation of the country, the team plays only a few games, these are mostly competitive games at regional championships.
history
Shortly after the country gained independence , the first national team was put together. At the Asian Games in 1951 in neighboring India, the team played their first international game, which ended in a defeat against Iran . At the next Asian Games in 1954, Burma made it to the semi-finals and ultimately won bronze after a 5-4 victory over the Philippines .
Myanmar has not yet managed to qualify for a World Cup. The team took part in the Asian Football Championship in 1968. What was then Burma experienced its greatest successes in the late 1960s and early 1970s. At the Asian Games in neighboring Thailand in 1966 , Burma defeated Iran 1-0 and won the gold medal of the competition. A year later they prevailed as group winners in qualifying for the 1968 Asian Cup. In the only participation in the Asian Cup so far, they finished second behind the host's team and ahead of the reigning Asian champions Israel .
At the Asian Games in 1970 Burma was able to win the gold medal again, in the final against South Korea both teams parted goalless and both won first place.
In 1972, the team qualified for the Olympic Games in Munich . In the Burmese team, which could not reach the intermediate round with two defeats in the preliminary round, there were two players named "Maung Aye" who had to be provided with numbers to distinguish them. The last group game against Sudan was won by Burma 2-0. It was the country's only participation in an international soccer competition so far. Then she disappeared from the scene and could only achieve mediocre success even at the regional championships. She was excluded from qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany because of her refusal to take on Iran in 2002. In qualifying for the 2004 Asian Football Cup , Iraq and Bahrain proved to be too strong opponents, so that Myanmar reached the last place in the group in the end.
It was not until October 2007 that a Myanmar team played a World Cup qualifier for the first time in their history. In the first round of the Asian qualification for the 2010 World Cup , however, the Myanmar team lost 7-0 and 4-0 against China and were eliminated early.
In recent years, smaller successes have been celebrated at some regional championships, for example Myanmar reached the semi-finals at the 2004 Tiger Cup and won the bronze medal at the 2007 SEA Games .
In the Asian qualification for the 2014 World Cup , Myanmar was eliminated in the second round against Oman with 2-0 and 2-0. After the incidents during the second leg of this pairing on July 28, 2011 - supporters of Myanmar had repeatedly thrown objects onto the field, whereupon the game was abandoned - FIFA initially excluded Myanmar from qualifying for the 2018 World Cup because of improper behavior by its fans . However, the FIFA Appeals Committee granted the Myanmar Association's appeal, so that the national team can take part in the preliminary round of the World Cup. However, it has to play its home games in a neutral place.
