The 1998 ASEAN soccer championship (officially 1998 Tiger Cup ) was the second edition of the Southeast Asian soccer competition and took place in Vietnam from August 26 to September 5, 1998 . The name of the competition is derived from the sponsor Tiger Beer .

The qualifying round, which was held for the first time, took place in Myanmar from March 14 to March 28, 1998 . All Southeast Asian national soccer teams that belonged to the ASEAN Football Federation were eligible to participate .

The following countries took part in the tournament:

Of the 10 participating countries, the four semi-finalists of the 1996 ASEAN soccer championship Thailand (defending champion), Malaysia (second), Vietnam (third) and Indonesia (fourth) were pre-qualified. The remaining 6 participants played in two groups with three teams each, of which the first and second placed qualified for the final round.

The final round was played in two groups of four teams each. The group winners and runners-up met in the semi-finals, the winners of the semi-finals then determined the winner of the 1998 ASEAN championship. The semi-final losers played off the tournament third.

Mursyid Effendi , who plays for Indonesia, scored an own goal in the last group game against Thailand so that his team would not have to face Vietnam in the semi-finals.
