The football Southeast Asian Championship 2018 (officially AFF Championship 2018 , also called AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 for sponsorship reasons ) was the twelfth edition of the tournament and took place from November 8th to December 15th, 2018.
Ten teams from the Southeast Asian region played for the title of Southeast Asian Champion . The defending champion was the team from Thailand .
Venue and mode
For the first time there was no host, instead the games were played in home and away games in the country of the respective home team. This was mainly due to the lack of spectators when the event was held in a single nation. An exception was East Timor , which could not provide a competitive stadium.
Initially, East Timor and Brunei played for tenth place, whereas the remaining nine participants were already pre-qualified. The overall table of the Southeast Asian Championship 2016 was decisive for this . Australia , a member of the organizing AFC since 2012 , did not take part in the competition.
The ten participants were divided into two groups of five teams each. The group winner and the runner-up reached the semi-finals, the winners of the semi-finals played the final. The semi-finals and the final were played in home and away games . A game for third place did not take place.
Each team was allowed to use up to fifty players in preparation, but had to announce a squad of 23 players before the start of the tournament.
qualification
The first leg took place on September 1, the second leg on September 8, 2018.
