The National Stadium Bukit Jalil ( Malay Stadium Nasional Bukit Jalil ) is a soccer stadium with an athletics facility in the 200 acres (around 809,371 m 2 ) complex Sukan Negara in Bukit Jalil, a suburb south of the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur . The facility replaced the Merdeka Stadium as the country's national stadium .

history

The stadium with an elliptical basic shape was built from 1994 to 1998 for the Commonwealth Games . The opening took place on January 1, 1998. It originally offered 100,200 spectator seats. The number has now been reduced to 87,411 seats, including 200 handicapped-accessible seats. The playing field is surrounded by a nine-lane athletics facility. The three circumferential stands are covered by a translucent membrane made of polyurethane spanned by a roof structure. A video wall is installed in the north and south curve behind both gates on the stands . The floodlight system with metal halide lamps offers a sufficient illuminance of 1,500 lux for television broadcasts . The stadium interior is separated from the auditorium by a ditch.

Currently the stadium is mainly used for soccer matches and is the venue for the home games of the Malaysian national soccer team . In 1998, 2001 to 2010 and 2014 the final of the Malaysia Cup took place in the stadium of Bukit Jalil. It was also the location of the Southeast Asian Games in 2001. In 2003, the English teams Newcastle United , Birmingham City and Chelsea FC competed in the first FA Premier League Asia Cup in the national stadium against the Malaysian national soccer team. At the end of 2006, the National Stadium was the main venue for the FESPIC Games ( Far East and South Pacific Games for the Disabled ). In 2007 it was one of the venues for the Asian Football Championship . The sports facility was one of four stadiums for the ASEAN football championship in 2012, and the venue was also used for the ASEAN football championship in 2014 .

The sports complex including the stadium is to be renovated for 1 billion MYR . Plans are currently underway for this.

Grandstand capacities

The stadium's 87,411 seats are divided into three tiers.

  • Lower tier: 37,265 seats
  • Middle tier: 26,586 seats
  • Upper tier: 23,560 seats
