The Malaysian national soccer team is the national team of Malaysia . The Football Association of Malaysia is the football association. It was founded in 1933 and joined FIFA in 1956. The team completed their first international match in 1953 as a selection of the Malaya Federation, which was dependent on Great Britain until 1957 . Since 1963, the team has represented Malaysia, which has expanded to include North Borneo.
The team has not yet qualified for a soccer world championship. In 1976, 1980 and 2007 Malaysia qualified for the Asian Cup , but failed in the first round. Under the German coach Karl-Heinz Weigang he qualified for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow . Since Malaysia joined the Olympic boycott of other countries, it did not take part.
