Jozef Vengloš (born February 18, 1936 in Ružomberok ) is a Slovak football coach and former Czechoslovak national football player.
Highlights of the coaching career
Doctor of Philosophy, Jozef Vengloš, won the cup as a player for TJ Slovan CHZJD Bratislava in 1962 and 1963 and won the championship in Czechoslovakia as coach of ŠK Slovan Bratislava in 1974 and 1975. When he, in personal union with Václav Ježek, successfully led the Czechoslovak national team through the European Championship qualification in 1976 against England, Portugal and Cyprus and in the quarter-finals after two games against the Soviet Union, the CSSR took part in the European Championship tournament in Yugoslavia. In the semifinals, the combination of Bratislava and Prague prevailed with 3-1 goals after extra time against the Netherlands and thus moved into the final. On June 20, the team around the outstanding goalkeepers Ivo Viktor and Libero Anton Ondruš decided the game in Belgrade against defending champions Germany with 5-3 goals after penalties.
In qualifying for the 1980 European Championship , Vengloš was solely responsible as head coach. He prevailed against France, Sweden and Luxembourg and was thus qualified for the 1980 finals in Italy. There he finished second behind Germany with his selection in group one and prevailed in the game for third place with 9: 8 goals on penalties against Italy.
