history

Ružomberok Town Hall

Ružomberok was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1233 as terra Reuche and received town charter in 1318. At this time, German settlers arrived as part of the German colonization to the east, who took over the town administration, but over the centuries they Slovakized. From 1339 to 1390, the then Rosenberg was a Free Royal City , then it was again subject to the counties of Liptov County and Likava Castle, which really hampered future development. In 1405 Ružomberok received market rights, but suffered in 1431–34 when the town was plundered several times by the Hussites . Despite violent disputes with Likava Castle, guilds and trade developed: at the end of the 17th century there were guilds of tailors, shoemakers, butchers and blacksmiths, as well as some mills and sawmills. The first school was founded in 1537.

In the 19th century the city became one of the centers of the Slovak national movement and was one of the largest “Slovak” cities in the Kingdom of Hungary - measured by the number of Slovaks living there . In the second half of the 19th century - especially after the completion of the Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn in 1871 - there was an upswing in industry, for example in paper and wood pulp mills and a brick factory. A textile factory was established at the end of the 19th century.

In 1907 the district of Černová was the site of the Černová tragedy , in which 15 people were killed.

After the collapse of Austria-Hungary in 1918, the city belonged to the newly formed Czechoslovakia . In the 1930s there were frequent strikes and unrest in Ružomberok due to the global economic crisis. In the time of the First Slovak Republic (1939-45) Ružomberok was the seat of one of the six counties, the Tatra County (Slovak Tatranská župa ). From the outbreak of the Slovak National Uprising to the occupation by the Red Army on April 15, 1945, heavy fighting broke out in the city and its surroundings. In the restored Czechoslovakia Ružomberok lost the long-standing status of a district town and became part of the Liptovský Mikuláš district ; this until the renewed independence of Slovakia in 1996.

Today, the city with its paper and cellulose mill is still characterized by industry, but the service sector and foreign transport have been developing for some years, such as in the Malinné ski area or in the farming village of Vlkolínec , which has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1993.
