Liptovská Štiavnica (until 1927 Slovak "Štiavnica" - until the 19th century "Veľká Štiavnica"; Hungarian Nagyselmec ) is a municipality in the Okres Ružomberok within the Žilinský kraj in northern Slovakia with 1269 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
geography
The village is located at the western end of the Liptovská kotlina basin , the western part of the larger Podtatranská kotlina on the corridor of the Selmec brook . The center of the village is at an altitude of 561 m nm and is seven kilometers from Ružomberok .
Neighboring municipalities are Štiavnička and Lisková in the north, Liptovské Sliače in the east, Partizánska Ľupča in the southeast, Liptovská Lúžna in the south, Ružomberok in the southwest and Ludrová in the west.
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1300 as Sceunicha and belonged to local nobles such as Štiavnický or Rakovszky .
In 1784 there were 83 houses and 704 inhabitants and in 1828 79 houses and 777 inhabitants.
population
According to the 2011 census, Liptovská Štiavnica had 1049 inhabitants, of which 1035 were Slovaks, four Czechs, two Magyars, one Polish and one inhabitant of other ethnic groups. Six residents made no statement. 806 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, 94 residents to the Evangelical Church A. B, eight residents to the Greek Catholic Church and four residents to the Evangelical Church; two residents were of other denominations. 81 inhabitants were without a denomination and the denomination of 54 inhabitants has not been determined.
