Podtatranská kotlina
The Podtatranská kotlina (German sub Tatra boiler ) is one in Slovakia situated valley floor , as geomorphological unit for Fatra-Tatra area is expected. This means that it is also part of the Inner Western Carpathians .
Location and demarcation
The valley is in the north of Slovakia. It has an east-west extension of about 60 km, is about 10 km long in the north-south axis and is limited
- in the north of the Tatras ,
- in the northeast of the Spišská Magura ( Zipser Magura ),
- in the east of the Levočské vrchy ( Leutschauer Berge ),
- in the southeast of the Kozie chrbty mountain range ,
- in the southwest of the Low Tatras ( Nízke Tatry ),
- to the west of the Veľká Fatra ( Big Fatra ),
- in the northwest of the Chočské vrchy Mountains .
Classification
The Podtatranská kotlina is divided into three sub-units:
- Liptovská kotlina (roughly " Liptau -kessel") in the west,
- Popradská kotlina (roughly " Poprad kettle") in the east,
- Tatranské podhorie (roughly "Tatra foothills") in the north.
The boundary between the first two sub-units essentially corresponds to the European watershed ; to the west the area is drained from the Váh ( Waag ) over the Danube into the Black Sea , to the east from the Poprad over the Dunajec and the Vistula into the Baltic Sea.
Characteristic and economy
Podtatranská kotlina lies at an average altitude of 700 to 800 m , the lowest point at 475 m ( Váh near Ružomberok ). The predominantly unforested region is used for agricultural purposes, but it is also industrially developed and quite densely populated. Several important traffic routes run through the valley basin (the Košice – Žilina railway line , the European route 50 , the partially completed D1 motorway ).
Many places are touristic starting points for the surrounding mountains, some are themselves important for tourism.
