Geomorphological classification of Slovakia - legend deutsch.png

The geomorphological division of Slovakia takes place in hierarchical form, with the main subdivision within the Alpine-Himalayan system into the subsystems of the Carpathian Mountains and the Pannonian Basin . These sub-systems are further subdivided into provinces, sub-provinces and areas. The classification shown on this page is based on the work of the Slovak geographers Emil Mazúr and Michal Lukniš from 1986, more recently shown on the overview map published by Dušan Kočický and Boris Ivanič from 2011.

The following, more detailed subdivision plays a very important role in the geography of Slovakia when describing places and landscapes.

overview

About two thirds of the territory is covered by the Carpathian Mountains. Slovakia has a share in both the Western and Eastern Carpathians . Both are in turn divided into Inner and Outer Carpathians.

About a third of the country consists of plains that belong to the Pannonian Basin. In the far west, Slovakia has a share in the Vienna Basin . In the southwest lies the Danube lowlands ( Podunajská nížina ). Both lowlands are part of the Little Hungarian Plain . The East Slovak Lowland ( Východoslovenská nížina ) in the south-east of the country , on the other hand, belongs to the Great Hungarian Plain .
