Šarišská vrchovina (German literally: Sharosher Mountains ) is an area of hills and valleys in the southern part of the Šariš (German Sharosh ) landscape in eastern Slovakia , which extends for the most part west of Prešov . The mountainous country extends from northwest to southeast, is 30 kilometers long and 12 to 15 kilometers wide.
Is limited the hill country from the mountains Bachureň and the intermediate Mountains Spišsko-Šarišské medzihorie in the north, the valley Košická kotlina and valley of the river Torysa in the east, from the mountains of Čierna hora in the south and from the mountains Branisko in the West. Geomorphologically, the Šarišská vrchovina belongs to the Outer Western Carpathians .
The mountainous country originated in the Tertiary and is formed by layers of sandstone , flysch , slate and conglomerate . These are reflected in the hilly landscape and smooth surface. Here arable land alternate with meadows, pastures and beech or hornbeam forests. Significant rivers are the Malá Svinka and the Veká Svinka , which, like the entire mountainous region, belong to the Hornád catchment area .
