Žilinská kotlina (German Silleiner Basin ) is a tectonic depression of irregular shape that belongs to the Waag valley basin within the Fatra-Tatra region in the Western Carpathians . The basin is located in northern Slovakia and is completely surrounded by mountains: starting clockwise from the north, there are Kysucká vrchovina , Little Fatra , Strážovské vrchy , Súľovské vrchy and Javorníky .

The rock layer is covered by sand and gravel sediments of the Waag and its tributaries, as well as loess soil and clay. Wide floodplains and flat low terraces formed around the Waag, Rajčanka , Kysuca and Varínka rivers .

The basin area was densely populated as early as the Stone Age. The largest city in the basin is Žilina (80,727 inhabitants), the administrative seat of Žilinský kraj . At the same time, the city is an important transport hub.
