The Kysucká vrchovina (German about Kischützer Bergland ) is a mountain range in Slovakia . It is named after the Kysuca River .

Location and limitation

The Kysucká vrchovina is located in the northwest of the country, not far from the border with the Czech Republic and Poland . It is part of the (Slovakian) Middle Beskids , which in turn belong to the Outer Western Carpathians .

It is limited

Geomorphologically , the Kysucká vrchovina is further divided into

  • Kysucké bradlá (in the south) with the subunits
    • Vadičovská brázda
    • Zázrivská brázda ,
  • Vojenné (in the northeast),
  • Bystrická brázda (in the north),
  • Krásňanská kotlina (in the southwest).

character

The highly indented mountainous region does not have a distinctive main ridge. Geologically it consists mainly of flysch . The highest peak is Pupov at 1095 m. In many places, the hill regions are characterized by larger pastures, while the slopes and valleys are predominantly forested. Both semi-natural mixed deciduous forests and spruce monocultures occur.

population

The region is almost exclusively inhabited by Slovaks . In the 16th century, the Wallachians immigrated from the southeastern part of the Carpathian Arc, but were assimilated by the Slovaks within a few generations . The Kysucká vrchovina is sparsely populated. Closed localities dominate in the west, whereas there are a large number of mostly tiny scattered settlements, especially in the eastern part of the mountains. In the remote areas, some folk architecture (wooden houses, shingle roofs) and traditional costumes have survived in remnants.

economy

The mountains themselves are mainly used for pasture and forestry purposes. There are almost only industrial companies in the peripheral regions.

In the north of the mountains lies the Nová Bystrica reservoir, which was completed in 1989 and serves as a drinking water supply.

tourism

In terms of tourism, the Kysucká vrchovina is overshadowed by the neighboring higher and better-known mountains, ie the Little Fatra and the Saybuscher Beskids. Nevertheless, there is a fairly dense network of marked hiking trails and a sufficient number of accommodations in the surrounding villages.

natural reserve

The south-eastern section of the area belongs to the protected area of the Little Fatra National Park . In the north, part of the region belongs to the Kysuce Protected Landscape Area . Several smaller areas have been placed under special protection, including

  • Zajačkova Lúka
  • Ľadonhora
  • Čierna Lutiša
  • Brodnianka

traffic

The connected villages can be reached by bus. The Bohumín - Košice railway line runs along the western edge of the Kysucká vrchovina . Many scattered settlements can only be reached on small roads or footpaths.
