The kk privileged Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn (Hungarian: cs. És kir. Szab. Kassa-Oderbergi Vasút (Ks.Od.), Czech. Košicko-bohumínská dráha (KBD), Slovak. Košicko-bohumínska železnica ) was a private railway company in Hungary . The main line of the company connected the industrial and coal mining area of Silesia with the then Upper Hungarian city of Kaschau (Hungarian. Kassa , today: Košice) in what is now eastern Slovakia . The company was based in Budapest .

history

In 1866 the Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn received the concession to build a railway that was to connect the Prussian railway network in Silesia with that of Hungary by the shortest possible route . In the years 1869 to 1872 the difficult route 362 km long main line from Oderberg in Austrian Silesia to Košice was completed. The management of the kk privileged company was located in the Hungarian capital Budapest , the management was later in Teschen (for the Austrian section) and Kosice.

Another main line was operated by the KsOd from 1870 later from Košice to the north to Eperjes (today: Prešov), where there was a connection to the also private Eperjes-Tarnów Railway in the direction of Leluchów in Austria (today Poland ). On April 18, 1874, the Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn merged with this company.

With the Lake Czorba rack railway in the High Tatras , the KsOd also operated a means of transport from 1896, which was mainly used for tourism.

The KsOd took over the management of a whole series of private local railways, which connected to the main line Kaschau-Oderberg.  The KsOd also operated on lines owned by the Hungarian State Railways MÁV - such as the Csadcza - Zwardoń connection . The railroad was very important for Hungary mainly because of the coal imports. But also in passenger traffic the main line of the railway company represented an important network element in Central European long-distance traffic, over which also through coaches to the Orient Express ran and during the First World War the Balkan train was carried.

After 1918, the route network of the Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn remained entirely in the newly founded Czechoslovakia . As a strategically important railway line (the Kaschau-Oderberg line was the only efficient connection in the east of the country), the KsOd was planned for nationalization as soon as possible.

On February 1, 1921, the company was nationalized. Lines and vehicles were taken over by the Czechoslovak State Railways ČSD.

Locomotives

The table shows the series designations of the kk priv. Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn and how they were adopted in the ČSD designation system in 1924.

The local railways under the management of the Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn usually procured their own locomotives. They later became part of the Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn and, with the exception of the narrow-gauge railways, received rail numbers according to the KsOd scheme.
