The MÁV XII was a tank locomotive series of the Hungarian State Railways MÁV for local rail traffic. Largely structurally identical locomotives were also procured from the private Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn KsOd as class XII (ČSD 310.5). From 1885 to 1927 these locomotives were produced in almost all locomotive factories in Austria-Hungary .

The external features of the locomotives were: external frames, Hall cranks in the drives with Stephenson external controls and a smoke chamber of Hungarian design that protruded up to the buffer beam, but was only installed in the course of renovations.

The machines delivered until 1891 were given the numbers 574–599, 751–790, 890–893, 1041–1074 and 1124–1128 in the MÁV's first designation scheme. These and the vehicles added from 1891 were given the designation XII 5181–5670 in the second scheme. The remaining locomotives were classified in the third scheme from 1911 as 377,001–487.

The XII series at the KsOd

From 1892 to 1908, the KsOd procured 13 units of this type for the local railways in operation. They were given the designation XII 521-533.

When the KsOd was nationalized in 1924, all copies came to the ČSD as 310.501–513 . They were retired by 1950.

The 377 series in Czechoslovakia

53 locomotives of the MÁV 377 series remained in the newly founded Czechoslovakia after 1918 . The Czechoslovak State Railways ČSD gave the locomotives the new series designation 310.4 from 1924.

Until 1957, the ČSD locomotives were in various services. Some locomotives were then sold to Werkbahnen, where they were in service until the 1970s.

310.433 was preserved as an operational museum locomotive, which was used as a works locomotive in the Pohronský Ruskov sugar factory . In 1981 it was restored to working order. Some typical details have also been restored to their original state (lever safety valves, lubricator, driver's cab, etc.). 310,442 and 443 were preserved as monument locomotives in Bratislava and Čierna nad Tisou , respectively .

The 377 series in Austria

The 377.425 stayed in Austria after the First World War and formed the 377 series at the BBÖ . The single item was taken out of service in 1937. The two examples of this series currently available in Austria were procured as museum locomotives from Hungary and are not directly related to their historical use.

Preserved copies

In line with the number of units in the series, numerous units of the 377 series have been preserved, most of them in Hungary, but also in Austria, Slovakia, Serbia, Slovenia and Croatia. Operational copies are available in Hungary and Slovakia. The 377.041 can be regarded as particularly valuable because it is a preserved locomotive with a short smoke chamber. It dates from 1886 and was then numbered 765. It was later given the number 5221, then the 377.041. The locomotive was privately owned in Austria from 1947 to 1955, after which it served in a sugar factory in Ács (Hungary) in Komárom-Esztergom county . In 1988 it was reconstructed and got its old number again. Today it is in the Budapest Railway Park .
