The SC Astra Vagoane Călători SA (dt. "Astra Passenger Cars ") is a Romanian manufacturer of rail vehicles for passenger transport . The company's headquarters are in Arad , which belonged to Austria-Hungary until 1920 .

The Austrian industrialist Johann Weitzer (1832–1902) founded the joint stock company Weitzer János Gép, - Waggongyár és Vasöntöde Részvénytársaság, Arad (German: Johann Weitzer machine, wagon construction and iron foundry joint stock company ) in 1891 . The company was an offshoot of the Grazer Wagen- und Waggonfabrik AG, which he had also founded in 1854 . Joh. Weitzer , Weitzer János is the Magyarized form of his name. From 1903, the Arad company wrote railway history with the Weitzer-De Dion-Bouton railcar , this petrol-electric powered vehicle was the first series-produced internal combustion railcar in Europe.

The Fabrica de automobile și vagoane Astra (German Astra Automobil- und Waggonfabrik ) in Arad was established in 1921 through the merger of Magyar Automobil Részvény Társaság Arad (German Hungarian Automobile AG Arad ) with Weitzer János Rt. Production was mainly on trucks , Omnibuses and trams aligned. Between 1922 and 1926, the company also built passenger cars under the brand name Astra . The only model was called 45/60 HP and was a large vehicle with a four-cylinder engine , 8000 cc displacement and 60 hp .

After the Second World War and the communist seizure of power in Romania, the company was nationalized. The company was the largest freight car manufacturer in Romania.

Astra Vagoane Arad and Astra Vagoane Călători

When it was privatized in 1998, Astra Vagoane was split up; the freight car division was offered as Astra Vagoane Arad SA on the international capital market, the passenger car division became a public limited company with Romanian capital as SC Astra Vagoane Călători SA .

70 percent of the freight car division was bought by the US rail vehicle manufacturer Trinity Industries in 1999 and sold to International Railway Systems (IRS) in 2006, which had its official headquarters in Luxembourg . At the beginning of November 2011, the Romanian IRS subsidiaries had to file for bankruptcy. In 2012 the plant was bought by Astra Rail Industries .

Imperio tram

Today, SC Astra Vagoane Călători SA manufactures passenger coaches and trams.

  • Wagons: The range includes modern passenger coaches like the Eurofima wagons .
  • Trams:
    • The first six "Imperio" trains have been in service in Arad since 2014. These are three-part short-articulated trolleys that were designed with the support of Siemens based on their " Avenio " type .
    • For the Timișoara tram , Astra has converted and modernized existing cars to the Armonia type .
    • Furthermore, a new type "Autentic" was developed for Timisoara from the "Imperio", with which the first test drives took place in October 2016.
