Armonia , romanian for harmony , is a specially for the tram Timişoara designed railcars -series. The 30 standard-gauge and high-floor short articulated wagons were manufactured between 2015 and 2018 and are structurally based heavily on the German Wegmann urban railway wagons of the GT4d, GT4e and GT4f series from the 1970s. These came used from the Bremen tram to Timișoara between 2007 and 2010 and served as donor wagons for the new Armonia type, also known as GT4MT , with the “M” standing for modernizat and the “T” for Timișoara. The originally planned name Revolut , however, could not prevail.
history
As a result of the Romanian revolution of 1989 , the then transport company replaced Regia Autonomă de Transport Timişoara ( RATT ), which since 2017 as de Societatea Transport Public Timişoara (STPT) operates, its originally made entirely of native Timis 2 - Greater trains existing fleet from 1995 completely altbrauchbare Tram cars from Germany . The consequence, however, was an inhomogeneous and outdated vehicle inventory, which caused high repair costs and numerous breakdowns, especially due to the difficult supply of spare parts.
After the originally planned procurement of 50 Citadis - Niederflurwagen 2011 failed for financial reasons, the former RATT, decided in 2013 to let German cars completely reconstructed. They were to receive modern electronics and a contemporary interior design using the old car bodies and traction motors. Originally, 50 old railcars were planned for this, the modernization of which would have cost 75 million euros.
In 2014, the transport company again modified its plans and awarded a contract worth 14.4 million euros for the reconstruction of almost all Wegmann railcars from the 1970s, a total of 30 of 33 cars, to a consortium from the Astra Vagoane Călători company in Arad and Electroputere VFU in Paşcani , each plant renewing 15 cars. A GT4 prepared in this way for the Iași tram in 2012 served as a model for the conversions, but it remained a one-off.
As part of the modernization program, which lasted until 2018, the Wegmann wagons received new front and rear sections made of plastic, new electrical equipment with electronic control from ICPE-SAERP from Bucharest , a braking system from Henning & Kahl , 1 + 1 seating with 29 seats. and 135 standing places, air conditioning for the driver's cab and passenger compartment, a single-arm pantograph , a lift for wheelchairs, video surveillance , a camera to monitor passenger changes and WiFi . Furthermore, since the conversion, they can only drive a maximum of 50 km / h and are no longer suitable for use with a sidecar , they only have an emergency coupling for towing.
De facto, the conversion was tantamount to a new building, as only the main chassis and bogies were taken over from the donor wagons , but the entire vehicle body including equipment was completely new. The original main landing gear had to be converted and significantly reinforced. The superstructure elements are based in part on standard parts of the low-floor Siemens Combino and Astra Imperio types , which were placed on the high-floor vehicle frame of the Wegmann car. The profiles were welded, the elements of the outer skin made of glass fiber reinforced plastic , glass and plastic were glued. The two new three-phase asynchronous motors of the type TN A 14 from UMEB are switched by IGBT technology and each have an output of 200 kilowatts. The company VRG Railway Components from Bistrița was responsible for the overall design .
The first two converted cars, number 3504 from Arad and 3517 from Paşcani, arrived in Timişoara in late June and early July 2015, respectively. The renewed vehicles kept the vehicle numbers of their donor vehicles and entered regular passenger service at the end of 2015. Initially they were only used on lines 1, 2, 6 and 9, which already have a modernized track infrastructure throughout. Since April 2018 the Armonia wagons have also been running sporadically on Line 7, and since July 2018 on Lines 4 and 8 and thus on all lines.
