Two two-axle railcars of the Timișoara tram in Romania were designated as type D. The standard-gauge, two-way car with a wooden body was converted from older vehicles in 1921 by the local Tramvaiele Comunale Timișoara (TCT) transport company .

production

Two Weitzer railcars from 1899, the opening year of the electric tram, served as donor vehicles for the two new type D railcars . They took over the passenger cabin, which was then supplemented by new and larger platforms, and the wheelbase was also expanded. The electrical equipment could also continue to be used.

With the D-cars, the company wanted to catch up in terms of capacity with the type B railcars built between 1906 and 1915 - on which the new platforms of the D-cars leaned visually - while the Weitzer railcars had proven to be too small and therefore in the Years 1919 to 1921 were mostly converted to sidecars .

The D-cars were 8900 millimeters (length over coupling) and 8100 millimeters (length of the car body) long, had an axle base of 2880 millimeters and were 2170 millimeters wide. They also weighed 9,350 kilograms and had 22 seats - four of them on the semi-open platforms - and standing room for 21. Externally, the D-cars could be distinguished from the B-cars by their different window layout. The D-cars had four slightly wider side windows in the middle and two slightly narrower side windows at the entrances.

The two new cars were given the numbers 44 (formerly car number 8) and 46 (formerly car number 4). However, the conversion did not prove itself, which is why the company alternatively - based on the D-car - built seven new DII railcars from 1922 onwards.

Mission history and whereabouts

The two D-cars were used either solo or with two-axle sidecars of all types available in Timișoara at the time, these were the sidecars 01 to 03 as well as the types A , AII , C and CII . Car 44 was taken out of service in 1939 and converted into a work motorcar with an open platform and a new driver's cab. Car 46, however, was still in use until the mid-1960s. Neither of the two D cars was preserved.
