From 1922 onwards, a series of standard-gauge trams - sidecars of the Timișoara tram in Romania , a series of 13 vehicles, was designated as Type A ; their company numbers were 1, 2 I , 2 II , 3, 5, 9-12 and 14-17. The local tram company Tramvaiele Comunale Timișoara (TCT) won it in the years 1919 to 1927 by demotorizing the Weitzer railcars from 1898/1899 , i.e. the original manufacturer was the János Weitzer wagon factory from Arad .

history

The initially only twelve type A sidecars were created as follows. It is not known which numbers were rebuilt in which year:

  • 1919: eight cars
  • 1920: four cars

The two Weitzer railcars with the numbers 7 and 13 demotored in 1921, however, have been completely reconstructed and therefore run as Type AII . In the course of the renovation, the Weitzer wagons, along with the electrical equipment, also had their front and rear windows removed. With the demotorization of the Weitzer railcars, the last remaining horse-drawn tram cars could be dispensed with. From then on, the new type of sidecar was used behind all of the existing railcar types of the Timișoara tram. These were the series B (from the beginning), D (from 1921), DII (from 1922), F (from 1925) and FII (from 1927).

Most of the former Weitzer railcars did not have a long life, even as sidecars; as early as 1922, they were finally completely decommissioned. They were successively exchanged for the largely identical 14 type C sidecars , which were replicas based on the Weitzer plans of 1898/1899. The twelve A-cars built in 1919/1920 were withdrawn from the stock as follows:

  • Car 11 on December 28, 1922
  • Car 17 on March 1, 1923
  • Car 12 on May 8, 1923
  • Car 15 on July 11, 1923
  • Car 2 on October 7, 1923
  • Car 3 on February 3, 1924
  • Car 14 on May 4, 1924
  • Car 16 on September 16, 1924
  • Car 5 on October 18, 1924
  • Car 9 on December 18, 1924
  • Car 1 on January 10, 1926
  • Car 10 on June 2, 1928

The 13th A-car

Because there was a great shortage of sidecars at the end of the 1920s, the last surviving Weitzer multiple unit was temporarily converted into a sidecar for regular passenger traffic on March 21, 1927. This was the former car number 6, which now served as a work car and carried the new number 2. Thus - after the first A-sidecar with the number 2 was taken out of service in 1923 - there was again a vehicle of this type with the same number. As early as March 1, 1932, the tram company used it again as a motorized work car, which ended the history of the Type A.
