Celestine Babayaro (born August 29, 1978 in Kaduna , Nigeria ) is a retired Nigerian soccer player . He also has a British passport. Babayaro's position was that of left-back, but he was also used as a left midfielder. He is the older brother of Haruna Babangida .

Career

Babayaro began his career at Plateau United in Nigeria. In 1994 the then only 16 year old moved to RSC Anderlecht in Belgium . In 1997 he was after winning the gold medal with the Nigerian team at the 1996 Olympics for Chelsea by London transfers. Back then, Chelsea beat clubs like Inter Milan , Deportivo La Coruña and Juventus Turin . In January 2005 he moved to Newcastle United . In December 2007 he dissolved his contract with Newcastle and was paid off.

On January 21, 2008 Babayaro signed a contract with the American club Los Angeles Galaxy for three years. He succeeded his former coach at Chelsea, Ruud Gullit . On March 3, 2008, he was sacked by Galaxy after playing just 45 minutes in a friendly against Seoul. The club justified this with the fact that you could stay within the team's salary budget. Before the 2008/09 season, Babayaro trained at Portsmouth FC , but received no offer from the club at the start of the season. Then he ended his professional career.

Babayaro played 35 times for the Nigerian national soccer team and scored two goals. He made his debut in November 1995 against the Uzbek national football team .

With his brother Emmanuel Babayaro , a goalkeeper, he won gold at the 1996 Olympics . Layo, another brother and midfielder, came to Belgium illegally in 1997 and played most of his career at KFC Katelijne-Waver in the fourth-class 1st Provinciale Antwerp, together with Rocky Ikpeba, the younger brother of Victor Ikpeba .

At RSC Anderlecht in November 1994 in a game against Steaua Bucharest he became the youngest player of all time (at 16 years, two months and 26 days) to play in the Champions League . However, Babayaro was sent off after 37 minutes in the game.

In 1996 he received the Ebbenhouten Schoen award .
