Haruna Babangida (born October 1, 1982 in Kaduna ) is a Nigerian football player on the position of striker . He is also a citizen of Spain . Haruna is the younger brother of Tijani Babangida and Celestine Babayaro . Due to his rather small body size and his robust tackle stance, his opponents often refer to him as a "poison dwarf".
Career
Babangida started his career in Nigeria with Shooting Stars FC . At the age of 13 he was spotted by talent scouts from top Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam , which is known for its excellent youth work. At this age he left his home and played for Ajax. Only a year later he was spotted at a youth tournament by the youth department of FC Barcelona , which then signed him. He first trained with the Catalans' senior squad when he was 15. Here he could not prevail, but played at the age of sixteen for the reserve FC Barcelona B in the Segunda División . He was awarded to second division club Terrassa in 2002, but was only able to score four goals. In the next season he loaned him to the Cádiz FC , where he could not prevail either. In 2004 the Ukrainian first division club Metalurg Donetsk signed him. After a season with only two goals in ten games, he moved to Greece for Olympiacos , where he was under contract until May 25, 2007. With Piraeus he was Greek champion in 2006 and 2007 , as well as Greek cup winner in 2006 . In his first game for the new employer Apollon Limassol , Babangida scored two goals against arch-rivals AEL Limassol (4-3).
At the beginning of the 2010/11 season , Babangida moved to the German Bundesliga club 1. FSV Mainz 05 on a free transfer . The contract was terminated on December 31, 2010, however, because, according to manager Heidel, despite his qualities, he did not fit the team's style of play.
On January 1, 2011, Babangida moved to the Dutch first division club Vitesse Arnheim . There he came to seven missions and scored one goal. At the end of the 2010/11 season he had to leave the club again.
After half a year without a club, Babangida was signed by the Austrian first division club SV Kapfenberg in January 2012 .
