Career as a player

societies

Kompany impresses with its physical strength, but also has exceptionally good technology. He played at RSC Anderlecht in his youth . In the 2002/03 season, at the age of 17, Kompany made the leap into the top team of the professional team.

In 2004 he became Belgian champion with RSC Anderlecht. In the same year he was voted Belgian footballer of the year by a large margin. In both 2004 and 2005 he received the “ Ebony Shoe ” for the best African or African-born footballer in Belgium.

At the end of the 2005/06 season he was able to celebrate his second championship with the purple-whites .

For the 2006/07 season, Hamburger SV signed him as the successor to Daniel Van Buyten for around eight million euros and other success-based payments. He signed a contract until 2012 and was the most expensive commitment in the history of the HSV club until Thiago Neves was signed .

In November 2006, however, he was injured and only made six season appearances. In preparation for the 2007/08 season Kompany made his comeback against an amateur team; on July 29, 2007 he succeeded in the UI Cup second leg against FC Dacia Chișinău his first goal after his break. Kompany scored his first Bundesliga goal on October 28, 2007 in a 1-0 away win against MSV Duisburg .

After the first Bundesliga match day of the 2008/09 season , on which he was substituted on in the game at Bayern Munich , he moved to the Premier League at Manchester City where he signed a contract until 2012.

Before the 2011/12 season , Manchester City coach Roberto Mancini made Kompany captain of his team. Thus Kompany is the successor to the Argentine striker Carlos Tévez .

For the season 2019/20 returned Kompany for RSC Anderlecht and took over parallel at times the task of the head coach. He completed 15 first division games (all from the start) in which he scored a goal. Then Kompany ended his career.

National team

In 2004 Kompany was appointed to the Belgian national team for the first time . He was the youngest national player in his country after Paul van Himst . At the U-21 European Football Championship in 2007 he was nominated for the U-21 of Belgium . However, he had to pass due to an injury. The team reached the semi-finals without him and was eliminated from Serbia .

It was for the 2008 Olympic Games in the football team of Belgium appointed. After the Supreme Court of Justice (CAS) confirmed that Bundesliga clubs did not have to leave their players for the Olympic Games, Kompany was ordered back to Germany after the preliminary round .

At the end of 2019, he and Dries Mertens were in seventh place in the ranking of all national players.

Kompany missed the 2016 European Championship finals due to an injury to the groin. Because of this injury, he was only able to play in the last two qualifying games for the 2018 World Cup . In the tournament itself, he played from the preliminary round against England to the game for 3rd place, which the Belgian national team won.

Career as a coach

For the season 2019/20 returned Kompany for RSC Anderlecht back, with whom he signed a contract with a term until 30 June 2022nd The RSC Anderlecht described its job as joueur-manager ( German  player manager ). This was generally interpreted to mean that he was a player- coach. In addition, Anderlecht stated that Kompany makes the fundamental decisions in terms of tactics and line-up, even if he does not have a trainer's license; he has the last word on disputes. Simon Davies , who had previously been active in the Manchester City youth team , was also signed as the official head coach with a three-year contract .

On August 22, 2019, Anderlecht had only scored two of a possible 12 points. The division of tasks was therefore changed: while the oldest player (after Kompany) was previously the captain, Kompany took on the task of captain of the team. Furthermore, he concentrated on his tasks as a player on match days. Even after RSC Anderlecht signed Franky Vercauteren as the new head coach on October 2, 2019 , with the previous head coach Simon Davies remaining at the club as assistant coach, it was initially said that Kompany's activity as a player manager would remain unchanged. The license commission of the Belgian Football Association determined on October 15, 2019 that Kompany had actually performed the duties of head coach, at least until September 26, 2019, without being in possession of the necessary coaching license. The commission justified this with the actual behavior of Kompany at press conferences and public training and the statement by RSC Anderlecht from May 2019 that Kompany has the last word in disputes. The commission did not take into account the other content of the employment contract. The RSC was punished by the commission with the highest possible fine of 5,000 euros. At the same time, the club was threatened with a license revocation if Kompany continued to work as a trainer without a license. RSC Anderlecht accepted this judgment on October 20, 2019, but emphasized that Kompany was not a coach. He would only have taken on management tasks. The association referred to the contractual regulations. Of course, Kompany is an experienced player who is often asked for advice by the coach and who also takes on a leadership role over the other players in training.

For the season 2020/21 ended Kompany his playing career and the team took over officially as head coach of Vercauteren, from which the club parted. He signed a contract until June 30, 2024. However, Kompany still does not have a sufficient coaching license. He is currently only taking part in appropriate courses.
