He made his debut in the Jupiler Pro League on May 9, 2009 (33rd matchday) in a 3-0 defeat by Sporting Charleroi , when he came on for Ederson Tomera in the 81st minute . He was also used on the last day of the season against RSC Anderlecht . His team won the Belgian Cup in the same season with a 2-0 win in the final against KV Mechelen .

On August 20 and 27, 2009 De Bruyne came in the qualifying games for the Europa League in the two games against OSC Lille to his first international appearances at club level. In the 2009/10 season he played 26 league games, where he scored his first league goal with a long-range shot to 1-0 on February 7, 2010 (25th matchday) against Standard Liège . In the course of the season he came to nine more appearances (two goals) in the newly introduced playoffs of the Jupiler Pro League and to two appearances in the national cup competition .

In July / August 2010 the offensive all-rounder played in the third qualifying round of the Europa League against Inter Turku from Finland and in the two qualifying games against FC Porto . In the 5-1 win over Turku he scored once, but against Porto his team had to admit defeat 0-3 and 2-4 and thus missed participation in the main round. In the first three league games of the 2010/11 season , he scored another three goals. At the end of the regular season he and his team qualified for the championship playoffs in second place behind RSC Anderlecht . He was used in 22 games in which he scored four goals. In the playoffs he played in all ten games (one goal) and Genk became Belgian champions with a 1-1 draw in the decisive last game against the tied Standard Liège .

In qualifying for the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League , Genk beat FK Partizan Belgrade and Maccabi Haifa - De Bruyne played in both games in the third round against Belgrade and qualified for the group stage for the second time in the club's history. On September 28, 2011 De Bruyne made his debut against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the European premier class. In the 5-4 victory in the league match against Club Bruges on October 29, 2011, he was three times on the list of goalscorers. However, he ended the second half of the current season on loan for Genk.

De Bruyne made his Premier League debut on August 18, 2013 (1st matchday) in a 2-0 win over Hull City . In the rest of the first half of the season, however, only three games in the League Cup and three games in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League were added.

VfL Wolfsburg (2014-2015)

Because De Bruyne was dissatisfied with his playing times in London, he moved from Chelsea to VfL Wolfsburg in January 2014 and signed a contract there until 2019. In the second half of the 2013/14 season he was immediately a regular for Lower Saxony and played in 16 Bundesliga games (three goals) and two DFB Cup games. At the end of the season there was a fifth place in the league and reaching the cup semi-finals.

In 34 league games he was the top scorer of the league with ten goals and 21 preparations, the number of assists also meant the setting of the Bundesliga record. There were also eleven appearances in the UEFA Europa League, in which he scored five times. De Bruyne made negative headlines in the game against Eintracht Frankfurt on matchday 19 when he insulted a ball boy with the words "Give me the ball, you motherfucker" and was sentenced by the DFB to a fine of 20,000 euros. The result at the end of the season was more positive: his club finished second behind FC Bayern Munich and won the DFB Cup with a 3-1 win in the final against Borussia Dortmund . De Bruyne scored the 2-1 goal for Wolfsburg with a long-range shot. After the game, he was chosen by a jury of experts as the most valuable player in the final and then by fans as the cup hero of the 2014/15 season and included in the DFB Cup Walk of Fame . He was also named Germany's Footballer of the Year and Belgium's Sportsman of the Year that year .

At the beginning of the 2015/16 season, Wolfsburg won the DFL Supercup against FC Bayern Munich . De Bruyne prepared the goal for 1: 1 shortly before the end by Nicklas Bendtner and converted his attempt in the subsequent penalty shoot-out .
