Rodrigo , real name Rodrigo Hernández Cascante and especially known at the beginning of his career as Rodri (born June 22, 1996 in Madrid ), is a Spanish football player who has been under contract with Manchester City since July 2019 .

Career

In the club

Rodrigo started playing football at Rayo Majadahonda and joined the youth team at Atlético Madrid in 2007 . In 2013 he was sorted out due to physical deficits and switched to the youth team of Villarreal FC . The defensive midfielder now measures 191 cm.

From February 2015 to May 2016 Rodrigo came in the second team in the third-tier Segunda División B used. On December 17, 2015, he made his debut in the 2-0 win against SD Huesca in the Copa del Rey in the first team. Rodrigo made his debut in the Primera División on April 17, 2016 , when he came on as a substitute in a 2-1 loss to Rayo Vallecano in the closing stages. In the 2016/17 season he moved up to the squad of the first team and made 23 league appearances. In the 2017/18 season Rodrigo made his final breakthrough as a regular player with 37 league appearances (36 times from the start and one goal).

For the 2018/19 season, Rodrigo moved to league rivals Atlético Madrid, for whom he had already played in his youth. At Atlético he received a contract that runs until June 2023. Under the head coach Diego Simeone , he quickly established himself as a regular player and completed 34 league games (32 times in the starting XI), in which he scored 3 goals.

For the 2019/20 season, Rodrigo moved to the English Premier League at Manchester City by means of his release clause of 70 million euros . He signed a contract with the reigning champion that ran until June 30, 2024.

In the national team

Rodrigo won the 2015 European Championship in Greece with the Spanish U-19 selection . With the U-21 selection he took part in the 2017 European Championships , but had to admit defeat to the German selection in the final .

In March 2018 Rodrigo was of Julen Lopetegui in the squad of the senior team for the matches against Germany and Argentina called. He made his debut for the national team on March 23, 2018 when he came on for Thiago in the 82nd minute of a 1-1 draw against Germany .
