Scott Paul Carson (born September 3, 1985 in Whitehaven ) is an English football goalkeeper who is on loan from Derby County to Manchester City .

Career

society

Carson began his football career with the amateur team Cleator Moor Celtic . There he was first discovered by John Seasmen, director of Leeds United Football Academy and former professional player for Millwall and Luton Town FC . Despite the fact that Carson lived outside the Leeds Academy catchment area , they kept in touch. He made his first appearance in the Leeds jersey in 2000 at a school tournament in Dublin and showed above-average performance.

Former Leeds defender Peter Hampton was so impressed after Carson's FA Youth Cup game at the Workington Reds amateur team that he recruited the young talented goalkeeper in July 2002 for the club's youth academy. Although he had just turned 18 and had not played a game for the Leeds first team, he was first called up to England's U-21 national team in October 2003. Shortly afterwards, less than 18 months after joining the youth academy and playing in the club's reserve team, he came to his first appearance for the professional team in January 2004 in the game against FC Middlesbrough after Paul Robinson was sent off two weeks later in a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford, he made his debut from the start. When Robinson then moved to Tottenham Hotspur , his way to the goalkeeper seemed paved.

In January 2005, Carson moved to his first top club, Liverpool , for a million pounds , rejecting a simultaneous offer from Chelsea and signing a 4½-year contract. It was also interesting in this context that it represented the first commitment of an English player under the aegis of Rafael Benítez . On March 5, 2005, he was there at the age of 19 in the defeat against Newcastle United his debut in the Premier League and was on April 4 of the same year, when Juventus Turin were defeated, for the first time in the Champions League between the posts. Basically, however, he was only the substitute in the goalkeeper position.

Carson was loaned to Sheffield Wednesday in March 2006 to gain match practice and after nine games he returned to Liverpool at the end of the season. In the years that followed, there were other rental businesses with Charlton Athletic and Aston Villa .

In 2008, the goalkeeper finally left Liverpool and moved to newly promoted West Bromwich Albion . Carson signed a four-year contract with the Baggies , with an option for another year through the club. Immediately he pushed the Irish international Dean Kiely out of the goal of West Bromwich and was on the first day of the 2008/09 season against Arsenal London in goal.

For the 2011/12 season Carson moves to the Süper Lig to the 2010 Turkish champions, Bursaspor , where he signed a three-year contract. In the summer of 2013 he moved to Wigan Athletic .

Shortly before the start of the 2019/20 season, Carson switched to reigning champions Manchester City on loan for a year , where he is scheduled as the third goalkeeper behind Ederson and Claudio Bravo . After the season, the loan was extended for the 2020/21 season.

National team

Carson played his first game for the U-21 national team in February 2004 in the 3-2 win against the Netherlands and over time he played a total of 18 games for this junior team, making him one of the ten most frequently used players.

In May 2005, Carson was appointed to the 22-man squad of England's national team for the first time, which faced the United States and Colombia . A year later he was initially not considered by Sven-Göran Eriksson for the squad for the 2006 World Cup , but then moved up on May 26, 2006 for the injured Robert Green , although at the time of his nomination he had not yet played a game for the English national football team had completed.

Scott made his real international debut in a friendly against Austria , where he kept his goal clean. Just a few days later, he made his “competitive debut” for EURO 2008 against Croatia . Carson made two crucial mistakes, England lost the game 2: 3 and was therefore not qualified for the European Championship for the first time since 1984. The English media and fans saw in him a bogeyman and the reason for the failed qualification.
