Paul William Robinson (born October 15, 1979 in Beverley , East Riding of Yorkshire ) is a former English football goalkeeper .

Robinson made his sporting breakthrough at Leeds United after the turn of the millennium , when he ousted the experienced Nigel Martyn after successful probation in the group stage of the 2000/01 Champions League season in the summer of 2002 . After relegation from Leeds, he developed in 2004 first at Tottenham Hotspur and four years later at Blackburn Rovers to "number 1" and one of the best English goalkeepers. In addition, he completed a total of 41 senior international matches for the English national team between 2003 and 2007 . At the final tournaments for the 2004 European Championship in Portugal and the 2006 World Cup in Germany , Robinson, who was valued primarily for his responsiveness, was part of the English squad and, after only being a substitute in Portugal, was between the posts in all five games two years later. In July 2017 he ended his active career after one last season at Burnley FC .

youth

Paul Robinson was born in Beverley , a town in the immediate vicinity of the city of York , in north-east England. In early childhood he joined the local club York City and received his first football training in its youth academy. The youth coordinators of the then third division club rated Robinson's talent as above average, but not outstanding, especially since other promising talents (including Nick Culkin ; later Manchester United ) were in the ranks of the Minstermen at the same time. Because of this, he was not guaranteed a regular place, so Robinson decided to try out a trial at the first division club Leeds United .

Career

Leeds United

In Leeds, he joined the youth academy at the age of 16. With the U-17 team of the Whites , he won the FA Youth Cup directly against Crystal Palace in his first season and then signed his first professional contract in July 1997. In the following years he was initially in the shadow of the goalkeeper Nigel Martyn . It was not until the 1998/99 season that he made his professional debut against Chelsea due to a rib injury to Martyn . In this and the following four games, he remained clean for 183 minutes before Derby County overcame him with a penalty . After his first missions, he was not used for the entire following season .

In October 2000 goalkeeper Martyn injured himself badly in the groin, so that Robinson took him in until shortly before the end of January 2001. Leeds had qualified for the Champions League by finishing third in the preseason and Robinson was used in a total of six out of twelve games in the two group phases (against FC Barcelona , AC Milan , Beşiktaş Istanbul , Real Madrid and twice in Lazio ) . Leeds finished the second group stage in second place and was eliminated only in the semi-final against FC Valencia out. Martyn had regained his regular place after his return and, with the exception of the (meaningless) home game against Rome, played all remaining games of the season.

When Martyn refused to take part in the pre-season preparation in Australia after the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea , coach Terry Venables demoted him and made Robinson number 1, who then played all games of the 2002/03 season . His performances also aroused the interest of national coach Sven-Göran Eriksson , who helped him make his international debut against Australia in February 2003 . After another international match and over 50 season appearances, there was speculation about a move to a top club in the Premier League. In addition, there were financial difficulties that forced Leeds to sell a number of top performers. For example, a sale of Robinson was accepted internally if it could keep stars like Mark Viduka or Harry Kewell . As a result, Aston Villa , Arsenal FC and Manchester United have expressed interest in the young goalkeeper. For the time being, however, all offers were rejected by the club management. After Villa increased the offer, a transfer fee of three million pounds was agreed . The only thing that stood in the way of the final change was the personal talks between Robinson and coach David O'Leary , who was Terry Venables' predecessor at Leeds and Robinson had trained for four years. These talks were broken off by the young goalkeeper at an early stage, with which he also spent the 2003/04 season at the Whites .

At the beginning of this season he scored his first professional goal in the second round of the League Cup . In the game against Swindon Town he scored the 2-2 for his team in stoppage time. In the subsequent penalty shootout, he also parried two penalty kicks and thus ensured Leeds advance to the next round. Overall, however, the season was disappointing for Leeds. Due to the financial bottlenecks and the associated loss of quality in the squad, Leeds played against relegation. Robinson was still the undisputed goalkeeper, but had to accept 79 goals in 38 games and could not prevent relegation.

Tottenham Hotspur

Just a few days after the established relegation, Robinson announced his move to Tottenham Hotspur . A deal within the framework of the previous winter transfer period had previously failed after the transfer deal was linked to an advance payment, which in turn did not comply with the statutes of the English Football Association. Robinson represented the successor as number 1 of Kasey Keller , who had moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach free of charge . In the first two seasons at Spurs , he was a sure source of support for the team, which also made him a regular goalkeeper in the national team.

Robinson was one of ten players from Tottenham's squad to contract a virus infection on May 6, 2006, the night before the crucial final game of the season against West Ham United . With a win, the club would have qualified for a place in the Champions League in front of local rivals Arsenal . The next morning, many players felt sick and the Spurs management tried to postpone the game. Due to the tight schedule of the league, this request could not be granted, so the Spurs had to appear with many sick players. Robinson was also in the starting line-up, but the ensuing 2-1 defeat put them in fifth place behind Arsenal.

In March 2007 he scored again when he sank a free kick from 80 yards in the game against Watford FC , as goalkeeper Ben Foster misjudged the bouncing ball that jumped over him into the goal.

In the 2007/08 season in particular , Robinson was no longer able to build on the performances from previous seasons, for which injury problems and a loss of self-confidence (also due to the loss of the regular place in the English national team) with accompanying form fluctuations were responsible. He was particularly unhappy against Reading FC when he carried the ball over his own goal line after a long-range shot by Stephen Hunt . From then on he lost his regular place to Radek Černý , although he was once again between the posts in the league cup final against Chelsea and was able to celebrate the first major title of his career with a 2-1 win.

Blackburn Rovers

On July 25, 2008 Robinson moved for a transfer fee of 3.5 million pounds to the Blackburn Rovers , where he signed a five-year contract and there was the first player commitment of the new coach Paul Ince . He took over the position of goalkeeper from Brad Friedel , who had left Blackburn at the same time for Aston Villa . Robinson's attempt to revitalize his career turned out to be difficult at first because, on the one hand, the legacy of veteran Friedel resulted in high expectations of his successor and, on the other hand, Robinson's weaknesses at the beginning generated a special media response after the events in the English national team. With some particularly good performances - including against Chelsea and especially against Wigan Athletic - he showed, however, that he was often able to save a tight score over time behind a mostly holey defense with a multitude of saves. So he even played himself back briefly in the focus of the English national team. At the same time, his performances fluctuated between weaknesses and international class in the following season 2009/10. For example, in the quarter-final win against Chelsea in the League Cup, he ensured victory with parades on penalties against Michael Ballack and Gaël Kakuta , after a few minutes earlier he had conceded a goal from Paulo Ferreira to equalize in stoppage time . Misses in shots by Michael Essien (Chelsea) and Robbie Blake (Burnley) were matched by top performances against Fulham, Hull and especially against Manchester United . In addition, he often took part in the build-up of the game with precise tees from his own half - he always took free kicks from there himself.

In the 2010/11 season, Robinson climbed with Blackburn to seventh place until January 2011, before a rapid fall towards relegation places began. Offers in the spring of Liverpool FC and Aston Villa as well as a possible return of Robinson to Tottenham fell apart during this time and with only two wins in the last 15 games he saved himself with Blackburn to a close relegation . The negative trend of the team continued in the 2011/12 season and it was not until March 2012 that Robinson made against Wolverhampton Wanderers (2-0) after 30 Premier League games in a row for a "clean slate" at a Blackburn game . In the end, however, this was not enough for relegation again and after just three games without conceding from 34 league appearances, Robinson rose with the Rovers as penultimate in the second-rate Football League Championship .

Robinson, who was promoted to captain in March 2012 after the departure of Ryan Nelsen and Christopher Samba , remained loyal to the club after relegation. At the beginning of the 2012/13 season, he played every game until coach Henning Berg preferred the young Jake Kean for the first time in December 2012 when he played against Blackpool FC . From then on, Kean secured the regular seat and further hardship befell Robinson when he underwent a back operation in March 2013. As a result of the operation, a blood clot formed in the lungs, which means that in April a failure was predicted well into the second half of 2013. The Rovers compensated for Robinson's failure with a short-term loan from Grzegorz Sandomierski .

After more than a year without match practice, he made his comeback in mid-December 2013 as part of a U-21 game against Middlesbrough. On January 4, 2014, he then completed a game for the first team in the 1-1 FA Cup against Manchester City . Henceforth he regained his regular place for the rest of the second division season 2013/14.

In the 2014-15 season, Robinson lost his place between the posts to Jason Steele . At the end of the season he left the Rovers after seven years of club membership.

Burnley FC

After Robinson was without a club for half a year, he signed a contract with Burnley FC until the end of the season in January 2016 .

On July 17, 2017, Robinson announced his retirement as an active soccer player.

English national team

Robinson was part of the squad of the English national team at the Euro 2004 in Portugal , in which he was not used behind David James . With the move to Tottenham and two strong seasons, he was also a goalkeeper in the national team. He represented his country in qualifying and in the finals of the 2006 World Cup in Germany . In the course of his declining performance in the club and a gross mistake in the European Championship 2008 qualifier in Croatia, he lost his regular place and was represented by Scott Carson , Robert Green and Ben Foster , among others . As a result, he was not considered for two years.

After national coach Fabio Capello nominated him as a substitute for a qualifying match for the 2010 World Cup , but had no use for him at the World Cup itself or afterwards, he announced his retirement from the national team on August 8, 2010. Robinson played a total of 41 international matches for England.
