Kasey Keller (born November 29, 1969 in Olympia , Washington ) is a former American football goalkeeper .

Club career

Keller began his career with the Portland Timbers team before moving to Millwall FC in the English Premier League during the 1990/91 season. After five years, he went to Leicester City for the 1996/97 season . From there, his path took him to Spain to Rayo Vallecano in the 1999/2000 season . He moved back to the English Premier League for Tottenham Hotspur in August 2001 . For the 2004/05 season he was loaned to Southampton FC and was a substitute keeper there.

During the winter break of the 2004/05 season he went to the Bundesliga for Borussia Mönchengladbach . There he initially had problems getting used to, but at the end of the season he had contributed to Borussia's relegation. After coach Dick Advocaat had vacated the coaching position at Borussia, he guarded the goal of Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 2005/06 season . For the 2006/07 season he was elected team captain by his teammates . His contract in Mönchengladbach expired on June 30, 2007. Keller completed a total of 78 Bundesliga games for Borussia. The fans nicknamed it "The Wall".

Shortly before the end of the transfer phase in summer 2007, Keller signed a contract with the Premier League club Fulham . For the 2009 season he joined the new Seattle Sounders franchise in Major League Soccer . He was in the first game of the Sounders in the MLS on March 19, 2009 in goal. The team won 3-0 against the New York Red Bulls . He also won the US Open Cup with the Sounders in 2009 and 2010.

Keller ended his career on November 3, 2011 after being eliminated in the quarterfinals against Real Salt Lake .

National team

Keller served on various youth and junior national teams in the United States. He took part in the Junior World Cup in 1987 and 1989 .

For the United States, the goalkeeper played 102 international matches , of which he won 52 games. He was the record goalkeeper in the USA until June 26, 2014 and was then replaced by Tim Howard with his 103rd international match.

Keller took part in the soccer world championships in 1990 , 1998 , 2002 and 2006 , but was only used in 1998 and 2006. In 1997, 1999, and 2005 he was named American Footballer of the Year. At the soccer tournament at the 1996 Summer Olympics , Keller was one of the three eligible senior players a goalkeeper for the United States Olympic team.

With the USA national team, Keller won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2005 and 2007 . After this tournament he resigned from the national team.

Private

  • After moving to Borussia Mönchengladbach, Keller fulfilled a childhood dream and moved with his family to an old knight's castle, Haus Donk , in Tönisvorst .
  • The American pop band Barcelona wrote a song about Keller.
  • A street is named after him in his hometown of Lacey, Washington state. It is close to his old high school "North Thurston High School".
