In 2000 he became German A-Junior Champion with the team.

Since Donovan could not play in the professional game of Leverkusen, but was only used for the amateurs in the third-class Regionalliga West / Südwest and with these in 2000 also relegated to the top division, he was dissatisfied and was transferred to San José in March 2001 Earthquakes on loan. National team

Landon Donovan at the 2010 World Cup against Algeria

Donovan took part in the 1999 U-17 World Cup and was named the best player of the tournament.

Donovan was in the squad of the Olympic selection of his country at the Olympic football tournament in Sydney 2000 and was substituted in in four games. In his first appearance on September 19 in Melbourne against the Kuwait selection , he also scored his first goal with the goal to make it 3-1 in the 88th minute. He reached the game for third place with his team, but lost it 2-0 to Chile. The fourth place is nevertheless the best placement of a US men's team at the Olympic football tournament.

He won his first international title on February 2, 2002 with the US national team, which won the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2002 in Pasadena 2-0 against the selection of Costa Rica . His first and for the time being only goal in the Gold Cup scored the later record scorer of the competition on January 19, 2002 in the first group game , the 2-1 against the selection of South Korea , with the goal of the interim 1-0 in the 35th minute.

He also played at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, scored a total of two goals, and reached the quarterfinals with his team , in which the team lost 1-0 to Germany , making it one of the best World Cup results in history of the USA.

Landon Donovan won the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the second time in 2005 with the USA national team. With his three goals, with which he topped the scorers list of the continental competition, he had a large part in it.

At the 2006 World Cup in Germany , Donovan, who, like his teammates, performed poorly, was eliminated in the preliminary round .

On March 25, 2007, Donovan scored the fastest goal in the history of the US national team (up to June 16, 2014): In the friendly against Ecuador , he scored after 35 seconds. With two more goals in the 66th and 67th minute, he also marked his second hat-trick for the US boys in the 3-1 win . In 2003 he scored four times against Cuba .

At the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup , Donovan made a significant contribution to the USA's successful title defense with 4 goals in 5 games , which for the first time resulted in a 2-1 defeat for Mexico after reaching the final. In 2009, he did not participate when the team in the final with 0: 5 against the choice of Mexico lost.

Donovan also took part in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with the national team and even won the group with him in front of England thanks to his 1-0 winning goal in stoppage time in the group game against Algeria , without which the team would have been eliminated. With his 44th international goal, Donovan made it possible for the team to reach the round of 16 , which despite another goal from him, was lost 2-1 after extra time against the selection of Ghana . With the interim equalizer with a penalty kick, he scored his fifth World Cup goal in the twelfth World Cup game, with which he was able to unite the most World Cup games as well as the most World Cup goals for the USA.

At the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2011, he and the national team were again defeated by Mexico in the final , this time with 2: 4 goals, after he had scored a 2-0 lead in the first half.

After an international break of almost 10 months, he was the first American player to score his 50th international goal on July 5, 2013 in San Diego , in the test international match against the Guatemalan team , which he scored with a penalty and then added another.

At the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2013 he scored five goals in the first five games and in the continental championships, with 18 goals, drew level with Samuel Eto'o , who also scored 18 goals at the African Championships . No player has scored more goals in a continental tournament.

With 57 international goals, he is the record scorer for the US national team and with 157 international matches, he is second among the US national team.

To everyone's surprise, Donovan was not nominated by coach Jürgen Klinsmann for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Klinsmann put his hopes at the tournament in young talents like Julian Green from Bayern Munich .
