Season course
Regular season
The first games of the season took place on March 8, 2014, the last games of the regular season will be played in October. Sporting Kansas City will enter the race as defending champions . The league is divided into two conferences. Each team plays two to three times against teams from the same conference, while teams from the other conference only play once a season. The home right of the individual games without a second leg and the third season matches alternate per season.
Like last season, FC Dallas got off to a successful start and led the overall table after seven match days, but then also slipped again. In the period that followed, the Seattle Sounders took over the championship lead and in the meantime (after 15 games) increased their lead in second place to seven points. DC United, who were only able to score 16 points in the entire 2013 season, already have 25 points in the 2014 season after 15 games and thus lead the table in the Eastern Conference. What was unusual at the beginning of the season was the high number of games that ended in a draw. Of the first 62 games played, 25 games (around 40%) ended in a draw. In the entire 2013 season, there were only 82 drawn games (25%) in 323 regular season games.
The Seattle Sounders were the first team to qualify for the playoffs after 27 games. Seattle had to play in the last two games against the previously tied LA Galaxy, won 4 points from these games and won the MLS Supporters' Shield.
In the game with the highest number of goals in the regular season, there were nine goals. On May 10, the New York Red Bulls and Chicago Fire finished their game with a final score of 4-5. The LA Galaxy achieved the highest home win against the Colorado Rapids on September 5, 6-0. Away on August 16, FC Dallas recorded the highest victory at the San Jose Earthquakes with 0: 5.

1 Toronto FC, Vancouver Whitecaps and Montreal Impact cannot qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League via Major League Soccer because the three teams come from Canada and the starting places are allocated by state. If the teams finish the season on a qualifying place for the Champions League, these starting places are automatically assigned to the next lower team. The three Canadian teams can only qualify for this competition through the Canadian Championship .
Regulation in the event of a tie
If two or more teams are tied in the table, the following comparison rules will be applied in order to determine the ranking of the teams. The comparison is decided as soon as one of the rules can determine a ranking of the teams concerned. Unlike z. B. In the German Bundesliga, it is not the goal difference that decides first, but the number of games won.
As in previous years, the rules in the 2014 season differ from those of the previous season, as the goal difference is now the higher decision criterion compared to the goals scored.
- Total number of wins
- Total goal difference
- Total number of goals scored
- lowest number of penalty points in the fair play table
- Away goal difference
- Number of away goals scored
- Home goal difference
- Number of home goals scored
- Coin toss (for two teams) or drawing of lots (for more than two teams)
If more than two teams are tied, as soon as one team is placed, the remaining teams with the same number of points will start again with rule 1.
Crosstab
The cross table shows the results of all games this season. The home team is listed in the left column and the visiting team in the top and bottom rows. Due to the unbalanced schedule, some games take place twice a season, while other theoretically possible matches are not played.

Playoffs
After the 34 game days of the regular season, the playoffs will be played out in several rounds, some with different modes. Except for the final, all games take place within the respective conference.
Knockout Round
The knockout round only applies to the teams in conference places 4 and 5. The team in place 4 plays a home game against the team from the same conference in place 5. There is no return game, but the game is played in the event of a tie after the regular playing time decided by extra time and, if necessary, penalty shoot-outs. The winner of that game progresses to the next round. The teams in places 1 to 3 in the respective conference skip this first round and move directly to the conference semifinals.
The two games will be played on October 29th (Western Conference) and October 30th (Eastern Conference).
Conference semifinals and finals
The conference semi-finals are played with a return leg, whereby the sum of the goals scored counts. For the first time, the away goals rule known from European competitions will be applied. However (in contrast to the European regulation) it is only applied at the end of regular time, i.e. after the end of extra time there will always be a penalty shoot-out if the sum of the goals of both teams from the two games is the same, regardless of how many of the goals were scored away from home.
The conference table leader plays against the winner of the first playoff round and the second in the conference table against the third. The first leg takes place in the stadium of the team ranked lower in the conference table, the second leg in the stadium of the other team. The winners who have been determined after both games reach the conference finals, which are played in the same mode with a return leg.
The Seattle Sounders benefited from the new away goal rule in the Conference semifinals, after 1: 1 in the away first leg at home a 0: 0 was enough to advance. Landon Donovan , who ended his career after the season, scored three goals in the semi-final second leg of the LA Galaxy against Real Salt Lake (5-0) . Columbus Crew received a yellow, a yellow-red and a red card in the second leg of the semifinals at New England Revolution and had to accept two dismissals. These were the only cards shown in this game. In the conference finals, New England Revolution and LA Galaxy prevailed, playing against each other for the MLS Cup for the third time after 2002 and 2005.
MLS Cup Final
The MLS Cup final was played between the two winners of the Conference Finals, New England Revolution and LA Galaxy, in the stadium of the team higher in the overall table and without a second leg. Los Angeles won the home game after extra time 2-1.

The 16 US teams of the MLS compete in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, while the three Canadian MLS teams contest the Canadian Championship. The two tournaments are the cup rounds of the USA and Canada, which are played in the knockout system. The winners qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League . Since the Canadian competition ended in June, the Canadian cup winner (Montreal Impact) can still compete in the Champions League season that starts in the same year, while the US cup winner does not compete until the following year, as the Champions League Season begins before the US Open Cup final.

Unlike the MLS season, the Champions League is played in a season that begins in June and ends in May of the following year. The US teams in the 2014 MLS season can therefore qualify for the 2015/16 Champions League season, while the Canadian team, which qualifies via the 2014 Canadian Championship in spring, can qualify for the 2014 Champions League season / 15 starts.
In addition to the cup winners of the two countries, the winners of the Eastern and Western Conference and the winners of the MLS Cup also qualify for the 2015/16 Champions League season if they come from the USA. If one of the Canadian teams wins the Eastern or Western Conference or the MLS Cup, or the MLS Cup winner is also the winner of one of the conferences, the next US team with the highest points in the regular season moves up to the Champions League starting position. The Canadian Association has only one starting place in the Champions League, which is filled with the winner of the Canadian Championship of the respective year.
