Michael Parkhurst (born January 24, 1984 in Providence , Rhode Island ) is a retired American football player of Irish descent. Parkhurst was mainly used as a full-back.
Career
In the club
Parkhurst's first professional club was Bradenton Academics , for which he played in his youth. He was a regular player in his first season as a professional. At the end of the season he was honored with the "MLS Rookie of the Year Award" as the best young player. In 2008 Purkhurst moved to the Danish first division club FC Nordsjælland , where he stayed for five years. He made his debut on March 1, 2009. In the following season he lost his regular place due to an injury, but he fought his way back in the following season. With Nordsjælland Parkhurst won the Danish championship title in the 2011/12 and 2009/10 seasons and the Danish Football Cup in 2010/11 . He scored four goals in 106 games. During the transition period in winter 2012/13 Parkhurst moved to Bundesliga club FC Augsburg . He signed a two-and-a-half-year contract until the end of June 2015. He made his debut on matchday 21 in a 1-1 draw at home against 1. FSV Mainz 05 , where he came on for Ronny Philp . He also played for Augsburg on the next match day. On January 13, 2014 Parkhurst terminated his contract with FC Augsburg prematurely. Shortly after the contract was terminated, Columbus Crew signed him. He played with the crew until the end of the 2016 season, leading the team onto the pitch as captain in the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
On December 11, 2016, he moved to Atlanta United for a transfer fee within the league .
National team
Parkhurst has an Irish passport in addition to the American one and should have played for the Irish national team. In 2007 Parkhurst was nominated for the first time for the US squad. He played his first international game against Trinidad and Tobago on July 9, 2007. At the 2008 Summer Olympics , he took part with the US U-23 squad. So far Parkhurst has played 28 caps for the United States.
