The Atlanta United FC , in the German language commonly known as Atlanta United , is a franchise of professional football - League Major League Soccer (MLS) in Atlanta , Georgia .
The team received the license for the MLS on April 16, 2014 and has been represented there since the 2017 season. The owner of the franchise is co-founder of home improvement chain The Home Depot and owner of the Atlanta Falcons , Arthur Blank .
The team played the home games of the first half of the 2017 season at the Bobby Dodd Stadium until they moved to the newly built Mercedes-Benz Stadium in September .
history
Before Atlanta won an MLS franchise on April 16, 2014, it was the largest region in the United States without a Major League Soccer team . In 2008 Arthur Blank laid the foundation stone for founding a soccer team from Atlanta. However, the project suffered its first setback in 2009 when plans to build a new stadium stalled.
In July 2010, MLS Vice President Dan Courtemanche stated that Atlanta had a good chance of getting a franchise approval. This was followed by talks between MLS and Blank.
On May 16, 2012 Arthur Blank presented at the annual meeting of season ticket holders of the Atlanta Falcons the new plans for a stadium, which can be used for both the Falcons and a possible football team. Thereupon the MLS stated in November 2012 that if the plans for the new stadium are realized, a possible accession of Atlantas is quite possible. In March 2013, the Atlanta Falcons and the city agreed to build the new stadium.
At the beginning of 2014, negotiations about an Atlanta MLS team entered the final phase. On April 16, 2014, Blank announced that the MLS had approved a franchise. Furthermore, the fans were involved in the definition of a team name and a logo, which were presented to the public on July 7, 2015.
In September 2016 Gerardo Martino was introduced as the team's future coach.
Atlanta United made its Major League Soccer debut on March 5, 2017. The game against the New York Red Bulls ended in a 1: 2 defeat. The only goal, and thus the first in the franchise's MLS history, was scored by Argentine Yamil Asad . The team won their first MLS win on matchday two of the 2017 season. Against Minnesota United it was 1: 6 for the team from Atlanta.
The first season could be concluded with a 3rd place in the Eastern Conference. In the subsequent play-offs, the Columbus crew lost in the first round (knockout round). The most successful goalscorer of the team was the Venezuelan Josef Martínez with 19 goals in the league. In their first appearance in the US Open Cup, the team made it to the round of 16, where they failed at the then second division Miami FC .
On January 9, 2018, the club announced that it would also register a team, Atlanta United 2 , for the competition in the USL , the second division in American professional football .
In the 2018 season they celebrated the championship for the first time with a 2-0 win in the final against the Portland Timbers and a year later they won the US Open Cup after beating Minnesota United 2-1 .
