Julian Gressel (* 16th December 1993 in Neustadt an der Aisch ) is a German footballer who since January 2020 for the MLS - Franchise D.C. United plays.

Career

youth

Gressel started playing football in his hometown at TSV Neustadt / Aisch. At the age of nine he switched to the youth of SpVgg Greuther Fürth . In 2009 he joined the B-youth of SG Quelle Fürth .

Beginnings in Germany

For the 2011/2012 season, Gressel moved to the first team of FC Eintracht Bamberg , which was then playing in the Bavarian regional soccer league . Gressel became the team's regular and mostly played in the position of right defender. After one season he returned to his youth club TSV Neustadt / Aisch, which plays in the Bavarian Northwest regional league.

College soccer in the USA

In 2013 Gressel decided to go to the USA to combine football and college. He went to Providence College in Providence , Rhode Island . In college he played for the Providence Friars , who play in the NCAA Division I. In his first season he was in the starting line-up in all 22 games. He scored a goal on his debut on August 30, 2013. During his time in college, he received many awards.

Major League Soccer

At the 2017 MLS SuperDraft, he was selected as the eighth pick by Atlanta United in the first round. He made his debut for Atlanta in the first MLS game of the franchise on March 6, 2017. In his inaugural season 2017 he reached a strong 4th place with Atlanta and thus the playoffs. After his first year in Major League Soccer , Gressel won the “Rookie of the Year” election by a large margin. In his second season with Atlanta, Gressel scored 4 goals in 33 regular season games and prepared 12 more. With Atlanta he was the first German to win the MLS Cup in 2018 , playing 90 minutes in the 2-0 win over the Portland Timbers . In the 2019 CONCACAF Champions League , the midfielder and the team failed in the quarter-finals at CF Monterrey , in the league play-offs at Toronto FC . After the season, his contract was extended by one year.

On January 21, 2020, Gressel moved to DC United within the MLS .
