Steven Birnbaum (born January 23, 1991 in Newport , California ) is an American football player .

The midfielder has played for DC United in Major League Soccer since 2014 .

Player career

Youth and college

Birnbaum played college soccer at the University of California at Berkeley for five years . In addition to college, he played for Orange County Blue Star in the USL Premier Development League .

DC United

On January 14, 2014, Birnbaum was selected in the MLS SuperDraft 2014 in the first round by DC United. In April 2014, he completed a game on the farm team , the Richmond Kickers , in the USL Pro . Due to an injury to DC defender Jeff Parke , Birnbaum returned and played the rest of the 2014 season as a regular to the end. At the end of the season he was nominated for the title of MLS Rookie of the Year, i.e. best young player.

National team

On January 28, 2015, he made his debut for the United States national soccer team in a friendly against Chile . On January 31, 2016, he scored his first international goal in a friendly against Iceland.
