Orange County Blue Star was an American football franchise of the USL Premier Development League of Irvine , California . The team, founded in 1997, played in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference of the USL PDL until 2012.

From 2007 to 2012 the home games were played in the Eagle Stadium, which is located on the grounds of Concordia University.

history

Until 2001 they played in the USL First Division , the second highest division, as Orange County Zodiac or Orange County Waves.

In 2001 the name was changed to Orange County Blue Star and since then you have played two classes lower in the USL Premier Development League , the fourth highest American league. So far, they have won the regular season in the Conference SouthWest three times . The Blue Stars never made it further than the quarter-finals of the playoffs.

In 2003 Jürgen Klinsmann played Jay Goppingen for the Blue Stars after his official retirement . He made eight games for the Californians, scoring five goals. His strike partner at the time, Matthew Taylor, played for Preußen Münster from the 2012/13 season , then for 1. FC Saarbrücken and Kickers Offenbach . In the 2000 MLS Super Draft, Orange County's Thorsten Damm was drawn as a player. However, he decided to return to Germany and was most recently assistant coach at SV Sandhausen in the 2nd Bundesliga. In addition, Ryan Coiner , a former player for Holstein Kiel and 1. FC Union Berlin , played for the club in his youth.

Stadion

Since 2007, the team has played their games on the soccer fields of Concordia University in Irvine, which can accommodate up to 1,000 spectators. Before that, the team played u. a. in stadiums on the grounds of the University of California and Orange Coast College. In 2004 home games were also played at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California .
