Robert "Robbie" Hampton Rogers III (born May 12, 1987 in Rancho Palos Verdes , California ) is a retired American football player .

Player career

Youth and college

Rogers attended Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana . There he was twice voted high school All-American. After graduation, he moved to the University of Maryland and played one season for the college selection team Maryland Terrapins. With the team he won the NCAA Championship in 2005.

He also played briefly with the Orange County Blue Stars in the USL Premier Development League in 2005 .

Career as a professional

In August 2006 Rogers signed a professional contract with the Dutch first division club SC Heerenveen . But he never played a game for the team and so moved to the Columbus Crew at the beginning of the 2007 MLS season . In the 2008 season, Rogers was one of the key players that led the team to winning the MLS Supporters' Shield and the MLS Cup . In 2008 he was named to the top team in Major League Soccer .

On January 11, 2012 Rogers moved to Leeds United in the English Football League Championship . After he completed only three short appearances and one starting eleven for Leeds in the second half of the 2011/12 season in the English second division, Rogers was awarded to third division FC Stevenage in August 2012 . In the third-rate Football League One , he was substituted on five times in the 2012/13 season and completed a starting eleven. On January 15, 2013, his contract was terminated on the day of his return after the end of the loan deal with Stevenage FC.

A month later, the non-contracted Rogers came out on his website as homosexual and at the same time announced his immediate retirement from professional football. On May 25, 2013 he announced his comeback with the Major League Soccer club LA Galaxy . He is the only major league soccer professional who has openly acknowledged his homosexuality. On May 27, 2013 he had his comeback against Seattle Sounders after being substituted on in the 77th minute. He is the first outed gay professional to play a game in MLS.

On November 7, 2017, Rogers announced his retirement from football at the age of 30. The reason is an ankle injury that he sustained in May of that year. In this nerve injured and he made after that no more play for the LA Galaxy.

National team

From 2004 to 2007 Rogers was a member of the US U-20 national team. He competed in the 2007 Canadian Junior World Cup and was a regular when the team reached the quarter-finals. In the technical report of the tournament he is listed next to Freddy Adu and Michael Bradley as an “outstanding player” of his team and described with the words “ fast-paced, attacking left midfielder, strong in one-on-one situations, good individual technique ”. A year later he took part with the U-23 selection at the 2008 Summer Olympics in China and was in the starting line-up in all three games in the preliminary round.

Rogers made his debut for the US senior team on January 24, 2009 in a game against Sweden. At the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2009 he was part of the squad and impressed in the game against Grenada with one goal and two assists. In the final, the US selection with Rogers in the starting eleven lost to Mexico 0-5.

Rogers was in the provisional squad for the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa, but was canceled by coach Bob Bradley on May 26, 2010. Rogers played his 18th and last international match on November 15, 2011 when he was substituted on in a friendly against Slovenia in stoppage time.

Private life

Robbie Rogers has been dating director Greg Berlanti since 2013 . In February 2016, the two became parents of a boy with the help of a surrogate mother . On May 13, 2019, they became parents to a daughter.
