John of Botzheim (* around 1480 in Achern , † 28 / 29. March 1535 in Ueberlingen ) also: Abstemius , was a German humanist .

Life

Johannes von Botzheim came from the noble family Botzheim . He was born as the son of the bailiff Michael, who died around 1519, and his wife Anna Eycher around 1480 in Achern and studied at the universities of Heidelberg (from 1496) and Bologna (from 1500). After 1504 Doctor of Canon Law doctorate was, he moved back to his homeland. There he got a position as vicar at the Strasbourg cathedral . In 1510 he received the benefice of a canon in Constance . During this time he made friends with Erasmus von Rotterdam and other scholars. Furthermore, von Botzheim was initially still for Martin Luther and wrote letters to him around 1520, but later distanced himself from him. In 1526, in the year of the Reformation, both bishop and cathedral chapter were abolished in Constance , so that von Botzheim emigrated to Überlingen because of his exile . There he died of an epidemic on March 28 or 29, 1535 .
