Bob Bradley (born March 3, 1958 in Montclair , New Jersey ) is an American football coach .

Career

Bradley is the most successful coach in the North American professional league Major League Soccer . In his nine years in MLS, he coached the Chicago Fire , MetroStars and CD Chivas USA .

First years as a trainer

Bradley grew up in New Jersey. He actively played soccer at West Essex High School in North Caldwell and later at Princeton University . But he never made it to a professional. After graduating from college, Bradley completed an apprenticeship training course at Procter & Gamble . He then went to Ohio University to study sports management. Only a short time later, at the age of 22, he became the coach of the local soccer team.

After his stay at Ohio University, he was hired by the then coach of the University of Virginia national team , Bruce Arena , as an assistant coach. In 1984 he moved back to his former Princeton University, where he was hired as head coach. There he headed the university team for the next eleven years. With the team he was able to win the Ivy League twice and in 1993 reached the semifinals of the NCAA Men's Division I Soccer Championship.

Entry into the professional football business and establishment

After more than ten years, Bradley became assistant coach of DC United in the newly formed North American professional league Major League Soccer in 1996 . Before that, he briefly coached the US U-23 team as an assistant coach. Two seasons later, in which he was the assistant coach of DC, the US Cup Open 1996, the East Zone Championship 1997 and the Major League Soccer 1996 and 1997, Bradley moved to Chicago Fire . In Chicago he looked after players such as Chris Armas , Dmytro Kowalenko , Luboš Kubík , Piotr Nowak , Tony Sanneh and Josh Wolff . Bradley and his new team immediately won the US Cup Open and qualified for the US West Zone Championship, in which the club qualified third for the final round of Major League Soccer. The team moved into the final of the US championship via the Colorado Rapids and Los Angeles Galaxy . There Bradley met his old club DC United. In the encounter on October 25, 1998 at the Rose Bowl Stadium , it was Jerzy Podbrożny and Diego Gutiérrez who scored for Chicago and decided the game 2-0 for Bradley's team. These achievements earned him the title of Trainer of the Year . As the US title holder, the coach led his team into the CONCACAF Champions League in 1999. They were able to prevail in the quarterfinals against Joe Public FC , but then failed in the semifinals against 1: 1 and 4: 5 on penalties against LD Alajuelense from Costa Rica. In 2000, the Chicago Fire won the US Cup Open again. Like two years earlier, the Bradley team reached the final of the US championship again, but had to admit defeat to the Kansas City Wizards 0-1. For the new season, the football teacher separated from the Men in Red and signed with the New York MetroStars . There he replaced Octavio Zambrano as coach. Bradley also made it to the final of the US Cup Open with his new team. However, he lost 0-1 to his ex-team from Chicago. In three years with the MetroStars he did not make it past the penultimate round of the championship. In 2005 Bradley was replaced by the Scots Mo Johnston on the post of coach. On November 23rd of the same year he took over the CD Chivas USA , which had only been founded in 2004, where he replaced Hans Westerhof . Bradley shaped the team into a competitive club and led them to the US championship playoffs. After a 2-1 win and a 0-2 defeat in the semi-finals of the Zone Championship against Houston Dynamo , the club was eliminated from the competition. Bradley's achievements were still recognized and he was named MLS Trainer of the Year for the second time.

US national coach

After this season it made the United States Soccer Federation for interim coach of the United States after Bruce Arena was canceled. In addition, he was now in charge of the US Olympic team (U-23). After a series of successes, Bradley was finally introduced as the new coach of the US Federation on May 15, 2007, after discussions with other candidates came to nothing. In 2007 he won the CONCACAF Gold Cup with the team . In the final Mexico were defeated 2-1. In the same year the US team was invited to the 2007 Copa America . Without winning a point, the team was eliminated after the preliminary round. From then on, Bradley concentrated on qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. As the 2007 Gold Cup winner, you were also entitled to take part in the 2009 Confederations Cup . You reach the final, but it was lost 2: 3 (2: 0) to Brazil . In addition, the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2009 was held in the same year . Again Bradley's team reached the final and again the opponent was Mexico. After the victory in 2007, the US team lost this time with a clear 0: 5. In October 2009, the US selection secured participation in the World Cup in South Africa. There Bradley led his team to the last sixteen, in which they were eliminated by Ghana . Bradley was named US National Coach of the Year 2009 by the American Olympic Committee in March 2010. He received this award as the first football coach since its introduction in 1996. After the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, there was speculation whether Bradley would step down as coach of the national team, but the US association wanted to continue working with the football teacher. Bradley was supposed to lead the US team to the 2014 World Cup , but in July 2011 the association announced the premature separation.

National coach of Egypt

In September 2011 Bradley took over the vacant position as head coach of the Egyptian national team . On June 30, 2012, his first setback came in Egypt. For the second time, the Egyptian national team failed to qualify for the Africa Cup. Bob Bradley's team lost 3-2 at home to Central African Republic in the first leg, but didn't get past 1-1 in the second leg. The political unrest in the country and the double burden of two parallel qualifications are said to be to blame. The goal was to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, which was missed by a 6-1 defeat in the playoff first leg against Ghana. As a result, his contract was not renewed.

Engagement in Europe

From January 2014 to November 2015 Bradley looked after the Norwegian first division club Stabæk Fotball . Immediately afterwards he signed a two-year contract with Le Havre AC . After he narrowly missed promotion to Ligue 1 with the club at the end of the 2015/16 season , he moved to the Premier League club Swansea City after the 10th match day of the following season , where he replaced the sacked Francesco Guidolin . With his job in Wales , he became the first US coach of the Premier League . After just under three months, the club separated on December 27, 2016, after a 1: 4 home defeat to West Ham United and the penultimate place in the table, again from Bradley.

Return to the USA

On July 27, 2017, Bradley was introduced as the new and first manager of the MLS franchise Los Angeles FC . The team will start playing in Major League Soccer from the 2018 season.
